What is the best day to check in?

Here are my guesses, and the reasoning behind:

Best chance for getting your requests: Friday check-in. My guess is that a lot of people check-out on Thursday due to the high point weekends. Therefore you've got a lot of people leaving on Friday morning and a lot of different views / floors available for Friday night check-in.

Best chance for getting into your room earlier than 4pm: Sunday. If the resort is at less than 100% occupancy on Friday and Saturday nights, they have fewer rooms to clean come Sunday morning.

I assume Sunday would also have the longest average wait time at the front desk to check-in.

Without hard data that can be mined into information, it's tough to say. My guess would be Friday since people like to save points.

I agree with Fri as being the best bet too.

What about checking into a "home" resort vs a "non-home" resort. Do you think if the front desk staff see you actually own, let's say, OKW--that this gets you a better chance for getting your requests met ? Is this information even available to them when you're checking in ? I actually own at OKW but stayed at BWV last summer. Upon checking in, the cm asked me if this (BWV) was my "home" resort. Do you think she was just making idle conversation or was there a reason behind her asking me this. I did not get a very good room there---and I used Preferred points. Just curious.

Good question! I have never been asked if OKW was my home resort when checking in.

I am hoping Sunday morning early would be a good time to check in for our OKW GV. My thought is that maybe there would be GV vacancys over the weekend, so one might actually be ready early. Is this thinking flawed? We leave Friday and will be staying Friday and Saturday in a studio at SSR and transfering to the GV at OKW on Sunday.

I guess Sunday is the biggest check in day? We always check in on Sunday...

I just booked our 05 VWL trip starting on a Sun, ending on a Sat
We had enough pts from 04 to stay 1wknd night - (05s pts will be rolled over to 06)
we'll have Sun to recupe before heading back to work

The wknd (Th-Sun?) before Im thinking of staying at a moderate, maybe WL if discounts work out - be easiest to switch since we'd already be there

Yes, I do think Sunday is a big check-in day and probably a check out day too. That's why I thought I would get over there early to pre-checkin and see if a GV just might be ready for us.

I think the front desk CM was making nice conversation. More likely the reason that you didn't get " a very good room" was that you booked at the 7 month window or less and your requests should have been lined up behind everyone who booked ahead of you.

FWIW, I agree that intuitively, a Friday check-in should provide the most number of check-outs and potentially the "best" room availability.

We have checked into BCV twice at noon on Saturday and immediately got a room that met ALL our requests. This year we're checking in on Thursday morning, and I suspect we'll get whatever's left.

This is why I love being a BWV owner - I don't have to play games with check-in schedules to get a confirmed Boardwalk view. :)

I really didnt think about Sunday being the worst day to check in... (and now that I have thought about it.... it prolly is the worst)

And of course we are checking in on Sunday.... but wont be at the resort until 6ish.... I hope the lines are gone by then....

And maybe, just maybe, if we check in late, our room would be gone and we wouldnt have to move after the first day!! LOL

Laura <-------- who rather have a noisy, bad view room for the whole vacation, rather than moving!

tjkraz's post got me thinking (yep, twice in one week - can my brain stand all these thoughts?):

I agree that Friday is the biggest check-out day, and Sunday is the biggest check-in day, but wouldn't Saturday be the best day to check-in, at least with regard to both getting.a.room.early and getting.your.requests? Yes, a lot of people check out Friday, but doesn't that overload Housekeeping, if they have to do a full cleaning on 30 or 40% of the rooms? At least I think that there wouldn't be a lot of rooms available until later in the day.

But Saturday, a lot of the rooms that DVCers will check into will have been empty Friday night, so they can get them early.

Hmmmmm.............

I agree with the DR. We used to always check-in on Sundays and they are the worst for getting your request and the room being ready at a decent hour. But a couple years ago we started flying instead of driving so we began checking in on Saturdays instead. Ever since we have received great rooms and the room has always been available at check-in.

I think I tend to agree with you on this.....it's was just one of those "what if's" that I figured I'd throw out there. It would be interesting to see the percentage of people who book at 7 mo vs 11 mo window and do a poll to see if anyone ever gets a not-so-desirable room the closer to their check-in date they book. I once booked at OKW during the summer at maybe 50-60 days out and got the best 2 bedroom villa on property I think ;) It really did have a great view of one of the small lakes.....we had ducks and swans at our porch every morning etc. You would think I would have gotten a room like Shan got recently (over near the edge of the road/no water view/smoke smell etc) if the theory of when you make your ressies is really valid. At the BWV, I never ever expected to get a BW view-----I just didn't expect a parking lot view for Preferred points especially when I found out people a couple doors down from me only had to use standard points. My room was like on some sort of invisible dividing line to where they switched to Preferred. I would have loved a pool view or anything besides what I got. But that's ok.....ya live and ya learn. My experience hasn't made me not ever want to stay there again or anything.
I was just wondering when you check in does the CM at the front desk know which resort is your home. So I guess with me checking in on a Tuesday next month I've got a pretty good chance of getting one of the less desirable rooms do you think ? Anyone ever check-in midweek ?
