Anyone have any knowledge of what the average I.Q. score would be for an elementary age child?

I've googled it and there seems to be a million different answers.

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure, but shouldn't it be 100 by definition?

"Average" is considered 90-115. Learned this a couple of years ago when we had all the LD tests done for me daughter.

Yah, 100 is the average for all ages. IQ is a measurement of intelligence, not capacity of knowledge.

:confused3 There are so many different websites that say so many different things.

Thanks for the information.

Does anyone know what is generally considered a high I.Q.?

Thanks, again. :sunny:

By my understanding,

Yes, by definition, based on the accepted standard system, IQ is rated on a bell-curve, with the average IQ rating at 100.

I remember when I was growing up, to get into the Gifted program you had to score at least 135 on an IQ test. So I guess that is considered high.

Ask any parent. They will tell you about 30 points below whatever their child has . . .

I'd say something around 115 and up. :confused3 I've taken an IQ test before. I can't remember the exact number. I want to say 120 something. They said that that was high. Not sure though. :confused3

There is an IQ test that you can take just for an idea of your own personal IQ
I will find that link for you: www.intelligencetest.com

It will give you a 10 minute test and then tell you the IQ that you have.

Here is another site:

I just wanted to add that the second link will ask you your first and last name and age. I used initials and gave a slightly different birthdate. I also turned down any and all offers. EVENTUALLY you will get your free score! Takes a few minutes to get there, but you do get there for free!

IQ means so little!

I have an extremely high one...does me NO good.

I have friends with lower than average ones that are very successful.

There are so many ways of being smart...IQ is just one small measure.

In this world, I would argue that people skills will get you further than IQ.

I know it probably only matters a little in the big scheme of things

I'm just really curious because our kids are going through testing right now. I just want to know.

I just wish there was one place to get the answer.

So, FreshTressa, what is high? :)

No idea...all I know is that mine falls into the genius range, and I'm no genius, lol.

I'm just good at IQ tests.

I'm a school psychologist so I administer and interpret intelligence tests every day at work. Yes, intelligence is supposed to remain stable over time, in the absence of any medical conditions, injuries, emotional, or behavioral influences that can alter one's performance during test administration. For example, if I am evaluating a student with hyperactive and impulsive behaviors that are present during the session, I interpret the results with caution, and note in my report that the results most likely represent a low estimate of that student's present level of cognitive ability due to said behaviors. Anyways, IQ isn't supposed to be referred to as a single number, but rather, as a range of scores (i.e, average, low average, borderline, high average, superior, very superior). When it is scored up, you do obtain the single score, but also a range of scores (confidence interval stating that if you were to repeat the assessemnt over time, you would have a 90 or 95% chance of obtaining scores within that range without the effect of error). The number is reported as a means of comparison to other assessment scores (they are all presented in standard score format, with the mean being 100 and a standard deviation of 15 or 10 depending on the test). That being said, to answer the OPs question, 100 is considered to be the average score, with 90-110 making the average range on tests like the WISC-IV, and 120 and above making the superior and very superior ranges.

Sorry for the clinical reponse. I've been sitting here writing up some psych reports that are due since I was away last week (at Disney, of course!) and I guess I'm on a roll.

Average IQ is statistically 100. The average IQ range (one standard deviation) is 85 to 115.
68% of all people fall in this range.

Going up to two standard deviations on the higher IQ side would be an IQ of 130. On the low side it's 70.
95.44% of all people have IQ's somewhere between 70 and 130.

To have an IQ of 130 means that your IQ is higher than 97.7% of the population.

To go up to 3 standard deviations (an IQ of 145) means that IQ is higher than 99.9% of the population.

The ranges are the same for children and adults and IQ has been shown to be fairly stable over the lifespan.

These are very interesting responses. I am glad I posted.

twocjsmom,

Thank you for your perspective.

Just a curious Mom here. :)

OK, first of all yes an average IQ would be 100. However, most well normed IQ test work in +/- increments of 15. So between 85 and 115 would be considered within 'normal range'. Now you come into the howevers and exceptions. An IQ of 85 while in normal range would most likely land a child in some sort of LD program. To be considered for most gifted programs, most schools will look at 125 as the marker to consider a student for a gifted program.
