What is the appeal of Sean Penn?

I never understood Sean Penn's appeal. I don't think he is attractive. The movies I've seen him in were so-so (granted I haven't seen many). He's in the news a lot for some unseemly things.

Is it mainly because of his "bad boy" image?

I didn't hear that. Last time I heard about him in the news it was because he was in Haiti and he and his daughter had helped rescue a women and her child from a building. Then they took them to get medical attention and he moved them in with him and his daughter till he could find them a place. That doesn't seem to unseemly to me. :rotfl:

I have liked some of his movies and he is a really good director. I believe he was in trouble recently for kicking or hitting some stalkerazzi guy who wouldn't get out of his face with the camera. Not sure of the details, but can't say I would blame him for it. Heck, I'm surprised more stars don't snap and try to take out a camera man or two. ;)

I guess it wasn't robbery.

Sean Penn was arrested and charged with criminal battery and vandalism on February 19, 2010 after an incident with a paparazzi that occurred in October of 2009.http://www.tmz.com/2010/02/19/sean-penn-crime-battery-vandalism-prosecution-jail-paparazzi/3

Penn has previously served time in jail for similar crimes. Penn reportedly abused the paparazzi and destroyed the camera. TMZ caught the incident, which happened in Brentwood, California on camera. If he is found guilty of both crimes he could be sentenced to a maximum term of 18 months in prison.http://www.tmz.com/2010/02/19/sean-penn-crime-battery-vandalism-prosecution-jail-paparazzi/4 http://www.examiner.com/x-5292-Cele...an-Penn-to-be-charged-in-attack-on-paparazzo5

Penn was arrested in the 1980s for abusing his wife at the time, Madonna. According to reports, he abused her with a baseball bat.http://www.examiner.com/x-5292-Cele...an-Penn-to-be-charged-in-attack-on-paparazzo6

Penn has also had another alteration with a paparazzi during his marriage with Madonna, when he reportedly spit at, punched and thew a rock at a paparazzi.http://www.nj.com/entertainment/celebrities/index.ssf/2010/02/sean_penn_to_be_charged_in_pap.html7

During the 2010 incident, Penn can be seen on video kicking the TMZ paparazzi and smashing his camera. The TMZ cameraman walked into the car and continued to film the incident from the car. Penn can also be heard telling the cameraman to leave.http://www.nj.com/entertainment/celebrities/index.ssf/2010/02/sean_penn_to_be_charged_in_pap.html8

Film wise, I haven't seen him in anything in 20+ years that I really liked. There are a few that were alright, but not a film I need to have in our DVD collection to watch again.

And as far as him as a person, there is nothing about him that appeals to me as a woman.

He did an incredible job with his role of Harvey Milk.

The only film I have seen him in and loved the role he played was Fast Times at Ridgemount High...yes, I was senior in high school at that time.

I think he's an incredible actor - if you look at some of the roles he's had, you can see he has quite a range (Fast times at Ridgemont High, I am Sam, Dead Man Walking).

From the tabloids it appears he has quite a temper and a bit of a slut, but then again he doesn't mind getting into the nitty gritty of it in places like Haiti. I remember seeing him in an interview after Katrina where he had actually gone in with a boat and work alongside the rescue units getting people out of their homes, going without a shower & sleep to try to get to "one more family".

I may not agree with him on some things but I admire his passion and willingness to stand behind his convictions.

I agree with Acklander. I think he is a really great actor. The Falcon and The snowman, Carlito's Way, Mystic River etc.

I also think he's sexy :rolleyes1

I loved him in Mystic River but admit I haven't seen him in his other roles because I'm not really a fan.

::yes:: He's a great actor.

I don't find anything appealing about him physically, but that's not what I go to movies for, so it's OK with me.

I too am a product of 80's (class of '85) and concur with, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. :rotfl2: I also liked him in Bad Boys (not the Will Smith version - which I love too). I know he's made a lot of movies, but looking over his filmography, I've not seen any of his other movies.

I don't "get" the fascination, either. I think he's a lunatic. He needs to leave the actual rescues to the professionals. If he wishes to donate time to raising money, or if he wishes to give money himself, that's one thing, but to pull up in a row boat right after Katrina? What a loon! I'm sure he thinks he's doing something noble, but all he really did was slow down the efforts. He had to get the crew in place, ya know. It just wasn't the time and/or place for his PR work.

He wasn't there to do PR work. And I suspect that those he rescued had a different opinion.

I thought I Am Sam was wonderful

I LOVE him in I Am Sam.

I thought he was good in Mystic River too!

::yes:: on both! Haven't seen Milk but I had read some great reviews about his performance.

I think he is a very good actor, but I don't find him attractive. I also get a strange vibe from him. I applaud his humanitarian efforts, though.

Well, that's 1 opinion, and many others don't share it.

He wasn't there for PR? Why the cameras then? And he stayed to help 1 more family? That 1 more family may have been rescued much sooner if they didn't have to wait for the camera crew to be ready.

I enjoy him as an actor but sometimes I find it hard to separate the actor from the political activist. That is where my problem with him lies. I don't like anyone shoving their political beliefs down my throat, whether I agree with them or not.

Physically, no attraction whatsoever.
