I am sorry if this has been asked before, as I am absolutely positive it has, but I have searched and can't seem to find a clear answer.

I have an 11 year old that still loves dressing up and would love to dress up as Merida or Mulan on a non-MNSSHP night.

Would she be allowed?

Thanks!

Yes!! She can definitely still dress up! My friends sister was 13 and she went in a Tiana dress. They really just don't want grownups dressing up so as to not confuse guests about who may or may not be the real character. I see lots of tween girls still dressing up in the parks, so your 11 yo DD should be fine :thumbsup2

Technically the cut off is 10, but I don't think anyone would make an issue out of an 11 year old dressing up.

I think that a lot toward the decision would be based on her size. Here is information the the official WDW FAQs:
What is the best way to dress for a day at the parks? Is there any clothing that isn't permissible?

The parks are a casual, family-oriented environment. We suggest you dress comfortably, wear good walking shoes and check the local weather report before you leave for the parks.

Ensuring that the parks are family friendly is an important part of the Disney experience. In that spirit, we ask you to use your discretion and common sense. Attire that is not appropriate for the theme parks (and which may result in refusal of admittance) includes but is not limited to:

Adult costumes or clothing that can be viewed as representative of an actual Disney character
Masks (unless you are dressing up for a particular event)
Clothing with objectionable material, including obscene language or graphics
Excessively torn clothing
Clothing which, by nature, exposes excessive portions of the skin that may be viewed as inappropriate for a family environment
Objectionable tattoos

A Guest is allowed into the parks if her or his hair (or make-up, if applicable) has been made to resemble a Disney Princess or character (for example, after a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover) provided the Guest is not also wearing a costume or clothed to look like the character.

The rules have changed fairly recently. The cut off is 10 y/o now. I know there was a thread about a 15 y/o who was asked to leave the park, because she was in a Tinkerbell costume a few months ago.

Since they can go to BBB until the age of 12, I would think that should be the cut off date.

That Tinkerbell looked very grown up. There's a big difference between a fully developed 15 year old wearing a skimpy Tink costume and an 11 year old dressing up.

I say go for it. just bring a back up just in case. I think the amount of money one spends on a Disney trip you should be able to dress up as whom ever you want to at any age! I love the Mouse dearly, but what a dumb rule.

I agree... to add to my previous comment, It does need to be tasteful. But still don't feel that age should be the question.

Go for it!

We purchased in WDW an XL or size 14 Tiana dress (can't remember exactly how it's labeled), for our DD. She's 12 and wears the dress joyfully in the parks.

I agree with PP the parks don't want anyone who looks like they could be the character roaming around but a young 11/ 12 year old is really not an issue.

And for those who will point out the 10 year old rule I disagree based on the BBB max age of 12 and the fact that the parks themselves are (or have recently) sold larger dresses.

Not that this has anything to do with the question at hand but my 15 year old went to the BBB last year. I have seen several teens, mothers (including myself) and heard from FGIT about grandmothers in the BBB becoming princessfied (my new word). I don't believe the BBB has a cut off age.

As to the dressing up in the parks I understand their reasoning but I have a very sad teenage daughter because of it. She so desperately wants to dress up as a princess again in Disney and just recently found out that at 5'8" she will not ever get hired to portray one if she ever works there. Sigh.....guess we'll have to plan on another trip during the MNSSHP some time.

To the OP I think your 11 year old should be fine. Just bring a back up incase but I don't believe cast members will mistake an 11 year old for an adult and ask her to change.

I agree....... but technically they CAN ask anyone entering the park on an adult ticket not to wear their costume. My daughter is 11 and we're bringing a few costumes (one for BBB, one to meet Merida, one to wear to Be Our Guest for dinner hopefully). I doubt she'll have any issues. She looks nothing like that 15 year old Tink. :rolleyes1

They changed the BBB rules this year. It has a firm 12 year old cutoff now.

Well I just copied both of these directly from the Disney site:

A Guest is allowed into the parks if her or his hair (or make-up, if applicable) has been made to resemble a Disney Princess or character (for example, after a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover) provided the Guest is not also wearing a costume or clothed to look like the character.

Guests nine years old and under are permitted to wear costumes in the parks of Walt Disney World. There are only two events during the year where guests older than nine years old are allowed to wear a costume in the parks of Walt Disney. The first is during Star Wars Weekends in Hollywood Studios which typically occurs in May and June of each year. The other time is at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party which is a hard ticket event in the Magic Kingdom that is typically held in September and October each year.

According to the above statements, it sounds like even though they take 12 y/o's into BBB, that same 12 y/o can enter the parks with the BBB hair, but not the costume.

She was very provocatively dressed as tinkerbell.

Is it wrong that this has me upset? She is going to be devastated. She has been talking since her baby sis was born about going to the BBB together when she turned 3. She may be 15 but she just loves this kind of stuff.

Sorry back to the original topic.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Another question:

What if it is a MNSSHP night? If we go at 10 am but plan to stay for the party, can she be dressed up all day? Or will se have to change into her costume?

We plan on going to the party on Halloween night, but if we are at MK on a party day...well, do they make everyone put their costumes on later?

Thanks!

VP

Arls- They may not be able to do BBB together but they can both get their hair done and pixie dusted at the Main Street Barbershop I believe. Then they can pick out some accessories like tiaras and jewelry together at Castle Couture. They can still have a Princess makeover together if you're creative and present other options in a positive way.

I'm sorry she won't get to do this. Maybe they could get their hair sparkled up together at the Main Street Barber Shop. Or maybe she can get into planning the younger sis's trip to the BBB, then do photos together in the studio. Or maybe plan your next trip during the Halloween party so they can dress up together.
