what is pin trading?

I am not a pin trader... yet... but from what I understand you can trade "authentic" pins w/ any CM. You buy them at numberous locations thru out the parks and shops in DW. You can even trade w/ fellow vacationers...

My first post! Yay!

Aaaanyway, pin trading is an addictive hobby, so tread carefully! As stated above, you basically trade pins with just about any Disney CM. I know, who knew "pin trading "would actually involve trading pins?!

Most (if not all) Disney stores have starter kits that include a lanyard and a pin or two. You don't need the lanyard, but you need at least one pin to begin the trading. Once you have your pin, feel free to ask any CM with a yellow lanyard to see their pins, and if you so desire, ask if you can trade your current pin with one of theirs. There are certain pins that they cannot trade, but they will let you know if that is the case. Don't be shy! The CM will be delighted to trade pins with you!

Once you get going, you'll find yourself with a lanyard (or hat) full of pins to take home to keep or save for your next trip to the World.

Happy trading!

WOW!!! What a great explanation of PIN TRADING!! I actually never knew how this exactly worked. I have seen while at WDW 1000x kids/adults over and over again asking a CM to see his/her pins but did not know this is how it worked!! AWESOME!!! :thumbsup2

But, there are some rare pins that can only be found on CM lanyards. That's the fun of it. They can't say no to you. That's the one thing i've learned. Just be polite and have fun!

It's excellent! I forget what the store at the Marketplace is called (I'm sure someone will come to my rescue with this one), but it is devoted entirely to pin trading. One of the cool things about this store is it creates a meeting point where any person can trade pins with one another. There are some serious pin traders out there with hundreds of pins on them at any one time, and they are a sight to see!

As for me, I only have four or five pins of Mickey and my favorite Nemo characters, Crush and Squirt. But on my next trip, I'll probably expand that to whatever gems I can find on the CM's lanyards!

I have a lot of pins but I donn't trade.

My dd5 started trading this past vacation. I wore the lanyard because she had alot of pins but she had to ask the CM permission to see their pins. There are special CM pins that you cannot purchase and those have little hidden mickeys on them - she has a Jasmine with a little silver mickey and a Pirates of the Carribean. The CM can't say no, but you can't give them a pin they already have. Also, only children can trade with CMs wearing a green lanyard. It was alot of fun!

My kids just started the pin trading on our last trip in February. My son thought it was funny when he traded a pin with a male CM working at the Hall of Presidents. He traded him a pin the said "I'm a Disney Princess". My son thought that was funny.

I don't pin trade but my niece and nephew do every time we are down there! They love it!!! They have books of pins but only take a small book with them each trip. They keep pins aside that they use for trading and have others that they would never consider trading. They love going up and checking out the pins on each CM! As stated above, the CM can only say no if you are trying to trade with a pin they already have on the lanyard. It's great for social interaction and pin trading is EVERYWHERE in WDW (and DL too).

The place at DTD (I don't remember the name either) has regular pin trading sessions and you can get some SERIOUS pin traders there. As with any of these things, it can become addictive! (and I already have one addiction - the DISboards)
