I don't know how familiar you are with American history, but on Christmas day George Washington crossed the Delaware in a suprise attack on the Trenton. It was a huge victory and moral booster after the tough winter.
They reenact the crossing every year (weather permitting) at the Washington Crossing Historic Park. I always wanted to go there but never managed.

) Even though the area is Jewish Wegmans is owned by a very Catholic family and close on Christmas anyway. And I would say at least 95% of the support personnel celebrate Christmas - so another reason they close all the stores for those of us 'behind the scenes'.
