What is most economical?

I have banked points for next year giving us 640 points to use.

We intend to use our points for the 7 night cruise and also 7 nights at the boardwalk, however I'm thinking about paying part cash to allow maybe either a cabin upgrade or room upgrade at the BWV.

Last year I paid cash for my sons 3 night cruise, the point saving allowed us a cabin upgrade, can the same thing be done with rooms?

Has anyone else experience with this type of thing, any help is most welcome.

You can't pay cash for an upgrade on DVC rooms. What you can do is use points for as many nights as you can and then pay cash for additional nights if they are available (especially good for weekend nights). For example, I only had enough points for 5 weeknights at OKW 1 bedroom in May but wanted to stay 7 nights so I am paying cash for the first 2 nights (Friday and Saturday). I was lucky enough to get a 25% member discount on those nights. The current room discounts codes through CRO are about the same price. I was hoping for an AP discount, which can be around 40% off but they haven't come out.
