I went to Google Maps and zoomed up real tight on one of them, and I still can't tell what they are. I even asked one of the environmental scientists I work with, and she couldn't figure out what they are, either.
They definitely look like they are pits, lines with geotextile cloth (which is the black edging), and filled with sand (which is the beige in the middle). Each one also has two square shapes in the middle, and a roadway leading into it.
If I didn't know better, I'd say they were some kind of ponds that have not yet been filled with water, and the squares inside would be fountains, as we all know the proclivity that Orlandoans have for putting fountains in any body of water.
Some weird possibilities:
- Maybe they are a not-yet-completed fish farm
- Maybe they are storage areas for that fine white sand that Disney likes to use for beaches
- Maybe they are incomplete wetland mitigation areas related to the new Western Way construction project
What we need is a local Orlando resident to drive out there and look for some kind of sign along the road that explains what the heck these things are!
