What is it with Senior Citizens and...

I suppose he thinks it'll be like Vicks Vaporub. do they still make that stuff? the idea is the fumes from the rub help break up the congestion. and Bengay is a muscle relaxant, it might make her more comfortable.

The old people in my family believed that Pine-orum (sp?) cured everything. Anyone ever heard of that stuff? Whew it stank! My great aunt even drank a sip every day (don't think that's the intended use), but she lived into her 90s.

Exactly. It's just the elderly passing on their wisdom. Take it or leave it. :teeth:

Doc, I THINK the rule is the more it stinks the better it works. LOL

My MIL swears by swallowing a small ball of rolled up Vicks Vapor rub when she has a cough.
I believe the instructions say NOT to use internally!
For heaven sakes, the stuff is a petroleum product, is it not?

:earseek:

I think Ben-gay might be too strong for a childs skin.

Us older folks learned a few tricks along the way and like to share. We mean well____Unless your Dad is nearby an easy reply is, I never thought of that, thanks and just ignore the advice!

I know someone that does that. He also insists that babies are to be held upside down by their feet for at least 30 minutes a day. Is supposedly good for their liver.

Since his liver has almost died from drinking so much, maybe we should do that to him.

My DH says that my mom is "The Queen of Liniments".:teeth: :teeth: :teeth: Even my mom thinks it's funny!:teeth:

ROTFL:rotfl: :rotfl:

Whats the difference in Vicks Vapor Rub and Bengay anyway? I always put Menthalatum on my chest when I'm congested and it helps. It also helps unstop my nose.

Laurie, that's too funny about the liver!

Windex! :rotfl:

When I was a kid they used Vicks.

There was also a black salve called Drawing Salve that they put on splinters. Anyone remember that?

How about the stuff that turned your skin orange that you put on cuts. It was like liquid fire. What was it called?

iodine was the orange stuff. I remember falling into a rose bush. I came out and mom painted me up like an Indian!!

My mom always put Vicks on me when I was congested. Now they make a Vicks patch for children. It comes cherry scented. It can go on the child's chest or their clothes if they have sensitive skin. It does get gummy by morning and you have to soak it to get it off. It seemed to help the kid's breathing a little.

What I can't seem to get through to the older members of my and DH's family, is that all these medications/treatments are to make the child comfortable...they won't cure the cold. When my kids get a cold, it really hits them hard. My grandmother is constantly asking me if I've taken the children to the doctor and did she give them a prescription.

ICHTHAMOL OINTMENT (I think it's made with fish guts or some fish parts hence the "ich")

Mecurochrome? Iodine? Methiolade?

What was that purple stuff they painted on you? I barely remember it, but it was liquid and royal purple.

Vickybaby

You're right. The black stuff stank and the other was mecurochrome. I used to get splinters all the time and knew I would get both the stinky stuff and the liquid fire.
