What is it with Oklahoma??-Warning -Vent

I can't believe a fellow Oklahoma State grad just said that! I think there are many intelligent Oklahomans out there. :confused3

That's what we dumb Oklahomans call SARCASM, 3 princesses. :thumbsup2

Sorry, didn't come across that way to me. It seemed like a dangerous statement to make on this thread where people who've never lived here are now welcome to come in and make blanket statements about why they'd never live here and how "flat" we are as a state. :confused3 What's that about? Obviously someone who's never driven through.

That's why I used this little guy :rolleyes2. I guess I just like living on the edge with my "dangerous statements." Seriously, I didn't mean it that way at all, and if anyone didn't understand the :rolleyes2, then I apologize. People are going to think and say whatever they want anyway. This thread seems to have more people coming to Oklahoma's defense than bashing the blandness of it, thankfully. When I lived in NY, some coworkers tried to get me to sub for them on a business trip to OK. When they returned, they couldn't quit talking about how beautiful the state was. Of course, they also couldn't get over the fact that they didn't see any teepees. There are lots of crazy misconceptions out there.

I'm sorry the OP is having such a hard time adjusting to Oklahoma. It's too bad that she's dealing with so many clueless people. I hope for her sake that she can move on to a place that will make her happy.

I've lived in Oklahoma most of my life. My family moved here from Kansas City when I was six. Most Okies that I deal with are educated. Most care about their work. Some sadly do not, but I think that is true of all locations and can't be blamed on the state where they live.

Yes, parts of the state are flat, but other parts are not. If you look around there are beautiful aspects to the varied landscape here. Maybe instead of dwelling on the negative you should look for some positives. We've been involved with Boy Scouting and I could give you a list of beautiful places to visit. It's not the same kind of beauty as Kansas City, but it's a different beauty. Sort of rough around the edges and natural.

The people in Oklahoma will give you the shirt off their backs if you need it. They are some of the most friendly and down-to-earth people I've ever met. Maybe you could take some weekend trips around the state and visit some museums or state parks? Oklahoma City has great opportunities for entertainment with theatre and the philharmonic and sports. We have a lovely zoo and some great museums.

I guess this thread makes me sad. People across the nation seem to think we're living in the dust bowl surrounded by teepees. I once had a woman ask me if I rode a horse to school every day when I was a child. :confused3 My dad was a professor at OU. He once picked up a visiting speaker at the airport. The guy was disappointed that Oklahoma City looks like other cities. "Where are all the Native Americans? When will I see cowboys riding their horses?" Wake up people. We aren't living in a western. Threads like this one encourage the stereotype that we're backward and stupid.

It's not all that different here. Okay, maybe your experience hasn't been all that great. I'd like to offer an appology from my state. Maybe some of our people aren't all that educated. Maybe some don't care. But most of us care a whole lot. I'm a college graduate and so are most of my friends. I don't usually have any trouble with my service and I hope to live here the rest of my life. Please don't assume that everyone in Oklahoma is the same as the people you've met. If you do, you are expecting to be miserable the rest of the time you spend here. I hope your experiences in this wonderful state improve.

Funny, I wanted to move here. We had a choice and I chose OK because my late husband was from Muskogee. ( I lived there for a very short time.) I didn't have any issues with Oklahoma until I arrived here. I have posted the people here are friendly. If I have insulted you I really am sorry, but I warned you this was a vent. These things are happening time after time after time. We live in a well known subdivision. We aren't out in the middle of nowhere.

My gripe is that when we have had problems with numerous businesses, we have tried politely to no end, to work with them so that the mistakes don't keep happening. Once, ok, no big deal, twice, ok, maybe the message didn't get through, 3rd, 4th and 5th, you just sort of throw your hands up in the air and say what is wrong with these people? :confused3

Did you ever think that just maybe its you and not the people from Oklahoma? :confused3

Not quite sure how it can be my fault when we aren't the ones doing the deliveries. :confused3 As I have posted repeatedly, we tell people about the problem in a nice way. When they ask for/check the address, we tell them yes, they are reading it right, but please be sure you are on X Circle, not X Drive. They both have the same house number on them, so we have had a lot of things go to the wrong house by mistake. We aren't rude about it.

I have worked MANY customer service type jobs. I try really hard to give them the benefit of the doubt, but just how many times should your pizza or package go to the wrong house????? Especially when the package with your laptop says CIRCLE clearly on the label?

I have never lived in a place where there is such an overwhelming amount of people who just don't care to do the job right.

oh sweetie - come on over to Philly. i could show you loads of them.

How ridiculous. Poor customer service happens in all 50 states. I'm sure in all 49 other states, there are inept pizza delivery boys too. There are lots of proud Oklahomans on this board. I would never dream of insulting a whole state on here.
So, in answer to your original question, there is nothing wrong with Oklahoma.

I would have to agree with this. I'm sure circle/drive or avenue/place gets messed up by delivery people in other states. Have you had "cirlce" address before? Also, I once heard of someone complaining in another state about a custom furniture order. Does that sound familiar to anyone? We have discovered as we travel around the US that MOST states have big cities and small town...hills and flat areas etc... ::yes:: BUT....it would be nice to be near a BIG BIG city with good rates and non-stop fights to WDW. :cool1:

OOPS Circle, anyway, no we haven't lived on a circle before, but we did live on a 9 1/2 Street for 10 years in another state and never had the REPEATED problems we do here. Did they happen? Yes, but not by the same companies over and over.

I'm sorry to hear that the OP is having such a hard time. We moved to Oklahoma 14 months ago and we've had none of these problems. One thing that still amazes us is how friendly everyone is. The thread title also elicited a groan from me because, as another poster mentioned, we don't need to perpetuate the myth that we live in teepees and ride horses to work! So, here's a thumbs up to Oklahoma from a non-native who's in no hurry to leave!

This isn't a tiny town. For those who know the state, we are stationed at Fort Sill.

At first I was a little irritated that you were criticizing a whole state since I grew up there (Duncan to be precise - about 30 miles from you). I don't hate Oklahoma, and would be willing to live in OKC or Tulsa if I had to which are both nice cities. I might even be willing to live in some of the medium-sized towns. But I'm really sorry for the OP since she has to live in Lawton :sad2:.

I'm sorry Lawtonians, but unless something has changed, Lawton (a small city) really is gross. I can see how the OP might have a negative opinion about the whole town and even state even though she is talking about particular instances with a business.

When I was growing up, we'd drive over to Lawton sometimes for the mall (when it was new), or to go out to eat, or to go to Sam's Club, or to go to school stuff at Cameron University. But we all always thought it was a nasty town. I know all the businesses are not bad and most of the people in Oklahoma are very nice, but I would NEVER live in Lawton. But some military people have no choice. Unfortunately, and I'm sorry if this is not a PC thing to say, it often seemed that it was the transientness of some of the lower-ranking military people that caused Lawton to become like it is. Hopefully you can move somewhere nicer soon.
