What is it about working at the post office

oh my how very sad. My dad retired from the post office many moons ago. I know he often talked about how stressful it could be but I never thought it could lead to something like this.

Many years ago right out of college my DH had a job as a supervisor at a Mail sorting facility (think Express Mail/Priority mail). He was in charge of about 200 staff....he was called every name in the book and often had to deal with 50 people on a shift calling out sick or what have you. He had to work sometimes 18+ hour shifts.

No lie, he got a head full of gray hair in a month's time. He soon quit and went back to get his Masters in HR - and his hair went back to his natural color! Those mail jobs are SO STRESSFUL and he made quite a few enemies due to having to fire people and ride them to get their job done.

I know of three people personally who have worked for the Postal system for quite a few years and you couldn't even begin to imagine how stressful those jobs are.. Quotas to be met, LONG hours of mandatory overtime, harassment that is tolerated by the higher ups, etc.. It's just awful.. I wouldn't work for the post office if you paid me $500 an hour.. There's a good reason why people say that someone acting irrationally has gone "postal".. It's almost like they intentionally try to "crack" their employees.. :(

I was just offered a Post Office job and I am VERY excited about it. At least 10 of my friends have emailed this story to me. OMG

I remember watching a tv program once that was done during a rash of Post Office shootings.

The showed one of the mail sorting facilities and the people at their stations. Every single movement they made over the entire day was broken down into a procedure that had to be followed.

When they wanted to go to the bathroom, they had a line on the floor that led from their area to the nearest restroom. They had to walk directly on the line, and return directly on the line.

That has always stuck in my head.

one of my patients today works at the post office. she says its because management is so bad. if she requests a day off, they usually turn it down. if she gets time off for a doctors visit, she has to bring back proof that she went. apparentlly there is a real power struggle within management.

Both my parents retired from the Post Office. They enjoyed their job for the most part but if they were working with some nut it made it really difficult. Its very hard to get fired from the PO most people that do this horrible thing would of been sent packing long before at almost any other job.

Why carry this to work? She should of ended it in her own home.

Very sad.

My BIL works in a post office and I asked him, he laughed and said, we have the same amount of stress as other jobs, and really didn't have the answer, now one does. :confused3

Very unfortunate.
