What is homecoming?

Please help me solve a mistery : As there are threads about homecoming-dresses and as I've heard songs about 'The Homecoming Queen', I would like to know exactly what this is all about.

Homecoming is when alumni of a school go back to that school for a celebration (the alumni are "coming home"). There's a homecoming football game, colleges sometimes have a parade, high schools have a homecoming dance, homecoming kings and queens are elected from the student body, and so forth.

High schools celebrate Homecoming some time in the fall. It usually corresponds to the football schedule, occuring on a Friday or Saturday night when the team is playing on their "home" field after being "away" playing other teams for a few weekends. Hence they are "coming home" and everyone is so happy they have a big party with a "queen" and her "maids", special band music on the football field, and a big formal dance. some schools hold their dance the same night as Homecoming, many hold the dance the next night so the band and football players can get cleaned up and look nice.

Not usually. Typically, homecoming is in the middle of the season (second or third game). Last home game is usually Senior Night.

It might depend on how your school district does things. Our homecoming game is always the last game of the season against our rival school.

we have two high schools in our district. one has homecoming October1, the other has homecoimng October 22. there's a parade and a game, and the sutdents elect a homecoming king and queen and their court.

We only do homecoming for University in Candada as far as I have seen anyhow. For highschool we just have reunions every 10 years or so. Homecoming is not a big thing other than in the US for highschool.
