What exactly does it mean to gatecheck? I plan on bringing a folding cart (designed for travel purposes) for luggage - do I need to gatecheck it? Does it count as my required carry-on?

(I need the cart because my wife and I will be bringing a 2 and 3 year old with us - we therefore have 4 tickets paid for which would mean 4 carry-ons, right?)Thanks!

You get it tagged at the end of the jetway, and it will be returned to you when you arrive at your destination(in the jetway). This usually applies to strollers and wheelchairs only, unless your traveling on a Regional Jet. They have very limited overhead space.
