What is FOTL?

Okay, I'm a newbie on this board, but does FOTL mean "front of the line?" DH, DS, and I are going to WDW this September but want to spend 1 or 2 days at Universal & Islands of Adventure also. How does FOTL work? Is it like a Fast Pass at Disney, or better? What hotel(s) do you have to stay in to get it? We had planned to stay all week at All Star Sports, but would it be worthwhile to stay a night or two at a Universal hotel to get FOTL? Also, how many days should we plan for UO & IOA...one or two? My son and I are big thrill seekers, so I think we'll like the faster paced rides. On the other hand, my hubby doesn't ride anything fast or high, are there enough shows and stuff to keep him busy
