What Is Bumping?

I am probably not up to date on all the terms used on discussion sites, etc. but what does it mean when someone joins a thread and just says "bumping" or "bump"? :confused3

I see this mostly on the Rent/Trade board. Thanks for any input.

It means they are replying only to get the thread to the top of the page. BUMP it up so to speak.

It's a reply to BUMP the thread to the top of the list. People on the rent/trade board want their offerings to be the first one a renter might see so they can rent their points faster.

Bringing Up My Post
It just brings your post up to the top of the page as others have mentioned.

The Rent/Trade board has special rules that apply. If someone posts a thread there, they MUST bump it at least once every 7-days to keep it active, per the R/T board requirements.

If they no longer need the thread, they 'close' it by editing it's title and adding the word "Closed". This shows others that the thread is no longer active.

If someone fails to 'bump' or 'close' their own thread, the moderators will lock it. If someone fails to maintain their thread and it is locked, that information is retained. Failure to maintain threads on a consistent basis will result in loss of posting privileges on the R/T board.

Also, those posting confirmed reservations are only allowed to do 2 reservations per year. If they post a thread, do not maintain it, and it gets locked, it counts toward their 2 allowed posts. They could repost again but it would count as their 2nd posting, thus using all of their 2-posts/year allotment. If they already had their 2 confirmed reservations posts for the year, they would not be allowed to repost.

The above is why you will see 'bumping' on the R/T board as it is a requirement for that board. For more information, refer to the 'sticky' posts at the top of the R/T board.

I never knew about that rule. When did it go into effect?

Thank you Caskbill for the explanation and for all the other's input as well. I think I have a better understanding now. I thought maybe it had something to do with that 70's dance "The Bump"! :rotfl2:

The 2 posts/year limitation has been a rule for the last few years.

The rules concerning thread titles, bumping, closing threads, all were implemented with the new DVC boards. For R/T that was 3/28/2006.
