What is appropriate Disney etiquette? Ms. Emily Post Advocates welcome….

As I once worked in housekeeping at a small hotel chain during college I always tip the mousekeeping. You'd be surprised what kind of stuff they have to deal with in some of those rooms. I've cleaned rooms where I thought the Board of Health should have been brought in. LOL.

As for manners in the parks:
1. Moving aside to read maps, locate family members etc is a must. When you stop, every one behind you has to stop including those often hard to control ECV's and strollers, often making them ram into the person ahead of them.

2. Sneezing and coughing your way through the park is just down and out gross. Try carrying a small pack of tissues to cover your mouth or nose when this occurs. If you cover your mouth or nose with your hands you are still using those hands to touch railings, ride equipment etc. As for the dirty tissues, don't drop them on the floor, put them in your pocket until you are near a garbage pail.

3. Crying children. As I have had to deal with this issue first hand (DD-5) last year I agree with removing the crying children from the situation. I had to leave a restaurant last year with my DD because the crying was non-stop. I took her outside(where the noise level was lower btw) and was able to calm her down. Once she returned to normal we returned to finish eating. An older couple sitting near us stopped on their way out and thanked me. I felt great and my daughter felt good too.

Tipping's become out of hand in our society! I mean I've always tipped people I was supposed to like waiters, bartenders, food delivery people, valets, etc., but it seems like every few months there's new people in your daily life you're expected to tip. I saw a news report the other day that said that not enough people are tipping their mailmen, doormen, gardeners, etc. Service people have crappy jobs at times, but to expect tips from everyone all the time for everything you do is getting out of control for those of us not made of money. I actually had no idea that it was expected for you to tip housekeepers in hotels. Glad I always keep the do not disturb sign up cus I can't afford to be tossing money around constantly (I stay in hotels quite a bit).

Tipping housekeeping isn't obligatory, but my wife & I figure that it's a nice gesture to the CM (typically undereducated women) who get low pay, little respect, zero visablity, and do some of the most grueling work. I travel the U.S. extensively for work and ALWAYS tip housekeeping whether I'm at a Marriott or Hampton Inn. It's something I like to do, but I guess it's not for everyone. It's not required, so it's all up to the individual.

Gee, we went from one hot topic (HC restrooms) to another (tipping Mousekeeping). I liked this thread better when we were just talking about general park etiquette and some of the funny breaches of etiquette we have seen. If we keep arguing hot button topics they will definitely close this thread!

I think that tipping is an appropriate topic in etiquette - but your right I don't want this to turn into an agrument. :flower:

First year in Disney (aprx. 7 yrs ago) had planned on tipping. Was saving coin for laundry so was counting. Upon returning to my room found change missing (Yes, this was Disney) Reported the theft, sadly... Also mousekeeping has not always done the best of jobs (maybe b/c they r so busy?) But I believe tips are rewards for jobs well done. When someone rips me off or doesn't do top job, my tip reflects that. Restaurants anywhere from 15 to 20%; bellhop $1 per bag or if particularly heavy we round up to the nearest i.e. $10 But honestly haven't tipped housekeeping since being robbed. It wasn't allot, but I figure she was taking bits from every room. Not enough to be noticed by the average tourist, but seeing as I love to count my money, and was planning on doing a load of laundry that evening - Sadly, she was caught.

Usually it would be, but if you go to the Resorts board you will see how heated it can become.

Lindsay....Is that really Donny Osmond dressed as Aladdin, or is your DH just saying the guys looks like Donny?

Keeping on topic....we didn't really have any problems with rudeness when we went two years ago, but I guess the biggest etiquette complaint I would have would be when people use bad language in public or when they make out in public. My four little boys are very observant, not to mention it offends me as well.

Lori P. :)

Lori,

LOL! No that really isn't Donny, but he looked just like him! It was hilarious!! Thanks for checking out the pics:earboy2:

How about offering a lady with a child a seat on an over full bus? Come on guys. I am liberated and I am fully capable of taking care of myself, but I cannot believe it when I see a woman that is older, pregnant, or carrying a baby or toddler get on the bus and try to stand, while you just look at her.

i have gotten up and offered my seat. Because it is the right thing to do. And of course my DH ALWAYS offers his seat to a lady, regardless of age, etc.

And moms, do you remember how folks would open doors for you when you were pregnant, but as soon as you started carrying the car seat or pushing a stoller, you were ignored? and had doors close on you? what's up with that?

Lyndsay, just wanted to let you know that I hear you and I get it and some never will unless they experience it themselves. What can you do? I was alot more polite about how I said it, you just came out with it, lol.....good for you. That took courage.

I have no plans of getting back into a debate because this comment is a fact and not debatable but 30 seconds can easily mean the difference of "making it on time" or well, not. You can disbelieve it all you want but its the truth and a fact, sorry.

'when i arrived at the airport, i used the skycap person, we were rushing, i tipped him 15 bucks, becuase, e unloaded the trunk while i emptied the rental car out, took all 6 of our bags l=plus 3 carry on bags and our winter coats to ata and we did not have to wait in line, he cecked out bags and went right to the front and got our tags and boarding passes and we were on our way to security, i was very grateful, does 15 seem to much, i think if i were not rushing i would have tipped between 8-10 dollars

I personally don't think its a such thing as tipping too much - if someone did something well or helpful and you have the means to tip by all means tip well!!!

Do not talk about non ride related things or make out on the rides. You are ruining everyone elses trip.

Our Dinosaur photo was ruined by a couple who spent the entire ride attached.

Ew.

I have no problems with tipping people for a job well done, but what irritates me is people expecting a tip simply cus they have the job reguardless if they do a poor job or not.

Please, lets not get into another debate about tips. There are so many on this board, anyway. Just agree to disagree! :grouphug:

I have to admit that sometimes my DH and I tip well etc. because it makes us feel good.
We have fun making the envelopes for housekeeping etc.....
So for us it's not really that we feel we have to ( no one should have to feel that way!!)
There is no right or wrong in tipping housekeeping!!!!

Thanks,eeyore0062, you said it best...this board goes off the deep end when it comes to tipping. For 2005 I hope we really can agree to disagree!!! :grouphug:

Happy New Year!! :wizard:
