We were just invited to an Eagle Scout ceremony for a close family friend's son.

What is an appropriate gift for this occasion?

When our kids' friends were invited to Eagle Scout Ceremonies we were told that it really isn't a gift giving occasion (by other Eagle Scouts). A congratulations card is sufficient.

Agreed- not gift giving occasion. A card with a heartfelt congratulations is nice, but even that is not the norm at Eagle ceremonies I have been to. (Parents sometimes deviate for their own son, mine will be getting an Eagle clock- because when he was a Tiger (first grade) he always pointed out this "fancy" {not!} clock with an Eagle on it at the scout shop. Told him I'd get when he was an Eagle :)

I give money. $25-$50 depending on how close I am to the child (ie-friend's child as opposed to nephew).

It is a great accomplishment and attending the ceremony is wonderful! A nice card with either cash or a gift card is what I would do. Also you could get a commemorative eagle coin.

Speaking as the wife of 1 eagle and the mother of 2 others, a congratulations card (as well as your presence) is gift enough.

Believe me, any boy who has achieved Eagle has sufficient "Boy Scout stuff" already, and it's difficult to find something for them.

My nephew's Eagle Scout project was cleaning up, landscaping and erecting a flag pole at the local animal shelter. I made a contribution in his honor to the animal shelter.

Hey, I am also the wife of an Eagle Scout and the mom of two Eagle Scouts. Congratulations on raising great kids!

Back to the OP, my sons got some cards with cash, some congratulatory cards, and some commemorative items - knives, framed artwork of Eagles, etc.

I always give cash--my friends son just made his last month and almost every person that came gave him cash/check or gift card.

We generally just give a card. But my brother did get some cash, mostly from relatives and some close friends. He also got a few small gifts.

One thing that he got that he loved was one of the Eagle Scout Knives which can be bought at the local scout shop or online. You will need the scout's full name and troop number to buy one. They have some other very nice comemerative items.

I'd give a donation to a charity that helps others, or to scouting itself, in the young gentleman's name.

You can purchase a flag that has been flown over the Capital Bldg, contact your state Senator or Representative for info.
