what is a white noise machine?

I've noticed several cruisers that mention sleeping with a white noise machine. I've tried searching on the internet and it usually pulls up something like a "sound soother" that has sounds of rain or water. Some of them are adverstised for infants.

I have a hard time sleeping with husband's snoring. A fan helped quite a bit but this time of year it dries out his sinuses too much. So I'm looking for something that doesn't make a "noise" but covers a noise.

Does anyone have a recommendation for what model to purchase? Or a link to one? I think I would enjoy the cruise if I'm not cramped in a small space with a snoring bear!!

I have one from Hammacher-Schlemmer. I paid about $50 about 15 years ago and it still works perfectly. I think they are still abou the same price. It is just like a fan....I can't stand the "sounds" like the ocean, or birds or crickets. I also can't stand an uneven kind of sound, like an unbalanced fan. This just covers noise and makes me sleep so much better. The label on the top says "Sleep Sound"

We use a HEPA filter in our bedroom as a "white noise" machine.

Ha! That is what we use also. One time my husband got out of bed and I came back in the room and he was stretched across the bed. I asked what happened and why was he back in bed and he answered "The filter got me".
Cleans the air and puts you to sleep at the same time.
Now we have a unit from Sharper Image that is a portable clock radio/CD player/ and several sounds including the white noise. Great for travel.

I started sleeping with a sound machine about 15 years ago when Sharper Image first came out with them. If I remember correctly, I paid $100 for an alarm clock/sound machine combo. The price for a sound machine has come down dramatically since then!! I just purchased another similar machine from Target for $29. That's for an alarm clock also. The sound machine alone is only $13. I've had sound machines from Sharper Image, Brookstone and Target (lol, what a combination!), and the ones at Target actually beat the Brookstone's in quality. I had to take the one to Brookstone back and it was a $75 machine!!

I can't sleep without it now. It's a great way to bring a little bit of home with you when you travel. My sound machine and my pillow are all I need to get a good night's sleep now!

JC Butterfly, it will definitely help with your DH's snoring. My beloved snores too, and our sound machine really takes the edge off. You'll still be able to hear him, obviously, but a nice solid background noise will help. Good luck!

I also swear by the Target sound machine! I think when I bought mine, they were about $17. I got hooked when my kids were infants and I could hear theirs through the baby monitor!!!! Both of my kids still sleep with theirs that they've had since they were newborns (they're now 7 and 4). I've found the "spring rain" to be the most soothing and can't sleep without it. As a matter of fact, we travel with ours and took it on our 12/5/04 Wonder cruise where it wouldn't work in the outlet!!! :sad2: So, I managed to find a "static" station on the TV that did the trick until our wonderful room hostess left us a message that she was getting the TV repaired!! Turns out we weren't supposed to have a static station and they got rid of it! :guilty: That last night was awful quiet!!!!!! Of course, we were so tired by then that everybody slept quite fine!!!! :cool1:

Got a TV in your bedroom? Tune it to a channel that isn't being broadcast on, turn the brightness down.

My kids both have small fans in their rooms going year round.
