What is a "soccer mom"?

Nah, you don't qualify, you are just a good ole stay at home Mom who loves her kids/family and shows it!

I agree. I don't think you qualify. I think you have to be snobby. If you aren't, you are disqualified!:p

Sorry, Camcolt, you don't qualify. You need to develop an attitude and then re-apply.

I have to say that I saw many more "soccer moms" at my DD's gymnastics class than I do on the sidelines of the soccer field. The soccer field parents are actually friendly and helpful. The women at the gymnastics class would cluster around the viewing area and gab with their friends, making it impossible for those who actually wanted to WATCH their children's progress. We've since dropped gymnastics.

BTW, my DH is a SAHD and you never hear anything about "soccer dads." He drives minivan, carries a cellphone, attends playgroup with our little one, and does most of the shuttling back and forth. Of course, we probably do not make enough $$ to qualify him anyway and we don't live in the right part of town.

I think soccer moms must differ regionally. Around here they're really down to earth and probably the least snobby of all the groups.

The minivan, cell phones and coffee are universal though.

(and thanks Buckalew) :)

I think I have to agree...when I asked I never thought the answer I would get would be "snobs."

I think of the "soccer moms" as those that are super involved in everything. They are always the team mom (but never the coach), the are on the PTA, they drive on all field trips (they have the minivan/suv's guess that part is pretty universal). But they are also down to earth, friendly, and they for the most part work out of the home.

I've never thought that soccer moms had to be snobby. They can be, but moms who work outside the home can be snobby too. For me, a soccer mom is one is who stays at home (or at least doesn't work very many hours) and is very involved in her kids' lives. Her kids are involved in activities outside of school, and the mom is involved in transporting them, knows when their competitions are, and so on.

Of course, I intend to be a soccer mom, so I'd be less inclined to call them snobby. :)

I agree with Camcalt, WDW2002 and Kermit!!!
I was really panicked that I might be classified amoung the "other" group.
Especially the part about DH making a ton of money! Why would I be complaining about an increase in mortgage and health insurance if that were the case?

Well now I want to know if people think I'm a 'soccer Mom'. All this time I thought I was, just because I drive a smaller SUV, go to all the soccer games and practices, gymastics and dance classes. I don't think I'm a snob but I do drink a lot of coffee and I do have my nails done. I have my nails done because if I didn't I would chew them to nothing. I'm a stay at home Mom, not stinking rich but not struggling.

I didn't realize the term "scoccer Mom' was such a bad thing until I read this thread.

I may be wrong to say the term "soccer mom". Maybe that isn't it. Maybe it is just snobby moms in general. Sitting at the tennis court, listening to these women, I wasn't thinking they were "soccer moms." I was, however, thinking about how snobby they were. There isn't anything wrong with the being a mom like you all describe (Camcolt and aahmom etc.) I'm involved in DD's life as well. I don't want to give the wrong impression. It isn't the women who drive SUVs (I've been there, done that one myself) or play tennis, or SAH/work part-time (I do that too) etc. It is mainly the snobbiness that is such a turnoff for me. Surely you have met women like these. (Where's UTB? ;))
Please forgive me for giving the wrong impression.

A client and I were talking about this very subject today. She is a retired(schoolteacher) grandmother and plays tennis with these young women. She was speaking of them having attitudes also. She said once (she taught Kindergarten) she had one of these types of ladies bring her DD into the classroom and she looked around and asked who would her daughter associate with. )

Oh Lord  Maybe she should be homeschooling, then her kids wouldn't have to deal with the public. LOL

I definitely know the people you are talking about. I just think it's funny that they are called 'soccer Moms' since I kinda consider myself a 'soccer (dance, gymnastics) Mom. I get what you are saying though.

I didnt realize it was bad until this thread either. Maybe this is another one of those regional things.

I don't think soccer moms are necessarily snobby, nor are they necessarily SAHMs. Funny, I do all the things listed in the post, except I work 40 hours per week outside the home.

I guess I'm a different category of soccer mom.

BTW, I also have the mini-van, the cell phone and the ever present coffee.

It's funny we have just started with organized sports last spring with DD playing tball. ( she dances ballet but never ran into any one that was snobby there! Thank goodness!) our t-ball league is what the other leagues concider the drop outs! Really! We have one league that is extremely competetive where are as we all cheer for everyone and don't care how long it takes to hit the ball! Must say I love it and we have fun!
This fall DS start soccer! I was really taken back with the first several games! Parents keeping score for the end of the season total! These kids are 4 and 5! Heck I am happy if my son is running in the right direction! So I am getting an eye full! I see some and here little comments about my sweet munchin who hasn't peaked yet! LOL! Cell phones ringing, people dressed to the stylish casual nines! At 9 AM on a Sat! I now at least blow my hair dry! LOL! And snacks! Each week the families try to out do the previous family! the kids have a huge choice of cookies, crackers ,juice boxes...makes me nuts!
But at least I drive a dark green mini van! and have my coffee in hand!

When you all say you are listening to these moms talk and they are snobs, what exactly are they saying that is snobby?

I have 3 kids that play soccer. I have mini-van..and drink coffee occasionally...cellphone for sure.!

I even have a chair...that says......SOCCER MOM!!!(AREN'T YOU ALL JEALOUS!! lol)

I don't care for the term, gives me bad vibes. Most moms are something. Basketball moms, baseball moms, Scout moms, band moms, cheerleading moms, football moms etc. Any mom who has to shlep kids around and grab whatever coffee we can get:D As for the snobs, who cares!
