What is a Lock-Off room?

We are going to VWL for the first time as DVC owners. The confirmation says we have a Lock-Off room and I don't know what that means.

Many of the 2 bedroom units at VWL (and the other DVC resorts) are made up of a 1 bedroom unit and a studio unit. There is a door between the two that can be "locked". When the door is locked, these units can be rented separately as a 1 bedroom and a studio, instead of just as a 2 bedroom unit. HTH.

It means there is a connecting door between the 1BR part and the studio part which can be closed and locked on each side, creating 2 different rooms - hence the "lock-off" term. In addition, it means that the studio portion also has a seperate door which provides outside access.

In a dedicated 2BR unit, there is still a door between the 2, but no exterior door in the studio portion.

Thank you! Could you also explain valet parking. Is it free for DVC members? Do we just tip and what is the suggested amount? If it is not free, how much does it cost?

Yes, valet parking at the VWL is no charge for DVC members. Show your DVC membership card. Tipping is accepted. I tip $1 when I turn the car over to them and $2 when they bring it back to me.

Valet parking is free for DVC members. Tips will vary depending on the individual preference. I've seen people say they tip valet anywhere between $1 and $3. Some tip on dropoff and pickup while others may tip only on pickup. I personally tip $2 - $3 each way as I usually visit WDW in the summer months when it is quite hot. They usually do a good job of jogging out to get your car. You may want to call ahead before leaving your room and they will make a good effort to have your car ready if it isn't too busy.

Just wanted to add my understanding that valet parking is free for DVC members at BWV, BCV and VWL even if you're not staying there.

I guess you just show the room key with DVC member on it and valet parking is no charge at those places? NOTE: You still have to pay regular valet rates at the Resorts.

I am looking into dvc and after reading this thread was wondering which resorts have designated 2 bedrooms?

Thanks,
Melissa

Dedicated? IIRC, the only DVC resort on DisneyWorld property with dedicated 2BR's is OKW, all of the other resorts have 2BR lockoffs. However, MS will divide these up and treat them like dedicated so that there is always a certain percentage of 2BR units available for renting which means you could run into a situation at say, BWV where a studio or 1BR unit isn't available, but a 2BR unit is.

I visited VWL twice (to eat lunch) while in Orlando on business and used the valet with my DVC card. They told me both times that the card was all that was required.
Just tip the valet!

We have a dedicated two bedroom at WLV this summer. Family has stayed there in dedicated two bedrooms also.

We have a dedicated 2 BR booked at BCV for Thanksgiving week. When we toured the models over Easter, I asked if we were really getting a dedicated 2 BR, and she said yes. Her description of the accomodations match that of a dedicated (only one exit/entrance to the rooms). HTH :)

Not Quite!
I stayed in a dedicated 2 BR at VWL last year. We specifically requested a dedicated 2BR there because it has 2 Queen Beds in the 2nd. BR whereas a 2BR lockoff at VWL has 1 Queen and 1 Sofabed.

At OKW, though, the 2nd BR of both dedicated or lockoff 2 BR's contain 2 Queen beds.

When making reservations for BCV for August I asked if there would be dedicated 2 BR's with 2 Queen beds - I was told that there would be and in addition the lockoff 2 BR's would have a Queen bed and a Sofabed in the 2nd BR

Thank you for all the answers. I am in a really tough debate. I know I want to be in the boardwalk area but can't decide between BWV or BCV. BCV is newer, can be financed by disney, and has dedicated 2-bedrooms (I am buying into DVC so that my whole family will go on vacation together). BWV has lower points (for the standard view which doesn't exist at BCV), and can be bought through a resale at a lower cost. I have read some threads that compare the two, but I am still having a really hard time deciding.

Thanks!
Melissa

I had a concern about buying a "newer" vs "older" resort when I tried to decide between OKW and the VWL. I decided to go with OKW to maximize my use of points and found that new vs old with DVC is a non-issue. they keep everything in tip top shape as far as I can tell whether you buy into a resort that was finished yesterday or a resort that opened 10 years ago. I have been a DVC member for 2 years but I have been going to WDW since 1976 and the only time I have seen any issue with the quality of accomodations is when you are unfortuanate enough to reserve rooms in the middle of an area that is getting renovated. This is an inconvenience but unavoidable.
