What is a "Grinder" ?(menu item up North)

Funny story...

My DH grew up in PA, as did his parents, where they call them hoagies. When they were younger a neighbor moved in near them who was from New England. The new neighbor was chatting with my MIL and asked her where they could get a good grinder. So she gave them directions to the local hardware store. They were pretty confused when they got there, lol!

I love grinders! My mom is from Massachusetts. We always have grinders when we visit our relatives. Yummy! My aunt fixes them with Italian sausage and/or meatballs, tomato sauce, on a hoagie roll.

Not really... I live in PA, and have for 44+ years... a hoagie is a cold sandwich... some people call it a grinder "if" it get toasted in an oven. The important part is the toasting in an oven... many styles of sandwich are called grinders if they are toasted.

I was born in CT and spent my early years there. We used to have grinders quite often, but they were never toasted. Usually they were salami and provolone with fried sweete peppers, lettuce and tomatoe, yum!

Not all grinders are toasted, up here anyways. Sorry, and I don't mean to confuse anyone....

If I order a ham and cheese grinder, they will ask "do ya want that toasted"....

Up here, not all grinders are toasted!!

One of the biggest "sellers" is an italian grinder. Although some pizza places will toast them, if you get one from a sandwich shop or deli (D'Angelo's, Subway, Marcucci's, Marzilli's, etc.) it is almost unheard of to get an Italian grinder toasted!!!

I moved from western PA to SE PA and had no idea what a grinder was!
We always called them hot subs or just hoagies and then would specify hot or cold. I find it really weird that most Italian hoagies around here are cold.

:)

OK, for clarification, this is the Philly area I speak of:

Grinder = Oven Toasted Sandwhich

Hoagie = cold sandwich with deli meats, onions, mayo or oil, cheese, and maybe peppers ( can be called a grinder if toasted )

Sub = well, with the exception of Subway, they don't get called that here, but I guess that is basically a hoagie?

Zep.... very local to the Norristown area ( a Philly suburb )... Basically a hoagie on a round roll, but to be true to its origins, it needs to have pickles on it.

once again...yep, what he said:rotfl: if you stick it in the oven it is a grinder:banana: if not, it is a HOAGIE:)

Sooooo, where does the Hero sandwich fit in? Is that the New York version of a grinder??

its the northern new england-(think connecticut, parts of massachusetts) for the sandwich on the long roll with cold cuts and lettuce and veggies. commonly called a sub, hoagie, hero, torpedo, po'boy in louisiana, and in Maine an italian.

Toasting is an otion and not neccesary. When you order it they ask -"do you want it toasted?"

Sorry - we'll have to agree to disagree! :)

I think the question is whether it has to be toasted to be considered a grinder, and not everyone agrees that it has to be toasted. Some friends from college who were from Mass. called any sub-type sandwich a grinder, cold or hot.

ETA - My MIL was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, so we're talking about the same area.
