I had a scare last night and ended up in the E.R. My chest was burning awfully and across my upper back was hurting so badly that is scared me and John took me to the ER.

They did blood work which came back normal and then they did an EKG just to rule out heart problems because my BP was 137/112 (I was also having a panic attack at this time.) Anyway the EKG came back normal...the DR. even said it was perfect and the more he listened and I talked he is convinced that I have acid reflux disease. I have an appt. with my regular Dr. tomorrow so the ER Dr. is going to send him a report and hopefully get me on meds for the reflux.

Anyway before I left they gave me 2 Darvocets and what she called a GI Cocktail. I tell you what .... it worked within 10 minutes. Now its back a little and I wish I had another.....anything normal in that I could take???? Any home remedies for reflux that I can do tonight until I see my Dr. tomorrow?

Oh Beauty..sounds like you had a scary night.

My doctor suggested papaya tablets..they are chewable and quite yummy.:D the enzyme in the papaya knock down the acid. Worth a try!

feel better soon.

Wow, never heard of those...where do you get them? Vitamin Isle, Food Isle???

I feel pretty sure my Dr. will put me on something tomorrow for it. Ugghh its a pain!

So sorry, Beth. Hope you are feeling better today. Hope the Doc can find something that will help you. :D

Oh Beth honey, I hope you feel better soon. My DH suffers from Acid Reflux & I've actually heard it come up on him while he's sleeping (like Niagara Falls, only backwards!) He jumps out of bed all red in the face & he's miserable. I can't imagine going through that! The doctor put my DH on ....oh shoot....I forgot the name! Anyway, it did help but the main thing is that he can't eat late, he can't spicy & he can't eat a lot!

You take good care of yourself now! Please let me know how things are going.

(((((Hugs))))))

It's basically antacids with lidocaine which is an anesthetic

I use natures sunshine Food Enzymes, it includes 8 different enzymes including those from papaya. The chain store The herb shop carries the brand

Hi,

Usually a GI cocktail will have something like Mylanta with Lidocaine added. It will relieve the pain in the chest if it is heartburn related.

Glad to hear that is all it was.

It worked well....last night.....now its back....I took some Tums but they didn't help....It feels like my whole mid-section up into my throat is on fire.

Because you have been diagnosed with acid reflux, I would seriously consider having a colonoscopy. Studies have shown a possible link between acid reflux systems and colon polyps or colon cancer in certain individuals.

Cut down on milk, citrus fruits, caffeine, tomato sauces, spicy foods, peppers, etc. (if you eat any of these items on a regular basis)

My dad had an awful problem with acid reflux for years and the acid started to leave scar tissue in his esophogus. He could barely eat and would choke and vomit. He went in for test and his esophogus was the size of what a newborn should have.

His sphinkter(sp?) valve was not "closing" properly and they did surgery through 3 little incisions and either bypassed that or created a new "flap" that wouldn't let the acid up as high as it had been going.

He has had NO!!! problems since. No heartburn, acid reflux, anything. It is a small miracle. He wasn't able to eat anything before and he lost tons of weight.

Good luck:D

You can also buy papaya (the fruit). I like it and it does help the stomach but alot of folks do not like the way it taste.

I have terrible reflux. I take Nexium (prescription) every morning, and Pepcid every evening. I was on the Nexium alone for a year, but it wasn't enough to completely stop the discomfort. The combo of the Pepcid and the Nexium does the trick for me. You should try Pepcid, Zantac, or Tagamet tonight. They're over-the-counter. By the way, you can take Tums with all of these meds, too. I hope you feel better!

GI Cocktail=Mylanta, Donnatol, and viscous lidocaine. We used it ALOT in our ER where I worked. Unfortunately, the effects don't last forever. You need to get yourself to a GI specialist, and most likely he will want to do an upper endoscopy to definitively diagnose you, and then put you on an H2 blocker like Nexium. Worked for me!! Actually, from the symptoms I described, which were much like yours, my doc put me on Nexium right away, and then I scheduled the scoping. Hope you feel better soon.

Just wanted to say...if you have to have an upper endoscopy, they are a breeze. Had one last year after I had problems with acid reflux (and because my brother died of colon cancer).

Are you under an unusual amount of stress? This can also make acid reflux worse.

{{{HUGS}}} Hope that you are feeling much better!

Well they should do an Endoscopy on you to determine if you maybe have an ulcer or hyatel(SP?) hernia, etc. They can also see if your esophogus is being eaten away from the acid reflux as well. They can also determine if your stomach has the bacteria for an ulcer, etc.
If you do indeed have acid reflux(GERD) they can prescribe somethign like prevacid, prilosec, or even nexium. I am sure there are toher things, but these are the most commmon prescirbed for this.

I would agree with all who are recommending an endoscopy, and Prevacid/Nexium or something along those lines. Make sure they give you Versed when they are doing the endo. You won't remember a thing!
