I posted this on the Community Board but decided the Budget Board may be more appropriate for what I need. I am bringing a computer home for work to use for snowy days that I don't want to drive in to work and so that my boyfriend can do his homework.

I need a cheap, but reputable internet provider. AOL is too expensive, but I did see that netzero is $10/mo and Peoplepc is $10/mo. I won't be using the internet all that much so dial-up is fine by me. I only need it to work from home which will be infrequent and my boyfriend will use it to do research for his homework. Any other companies that are that cheap and reliable? Anyone ever used PeoplePC?

Depends, Where I live dial up is not an option because the connection speeds are too slow to be of use to anyone......

Not just slow but realllllllly slooooooooooooooooooooooow...

We switched to Verizon DSL for $14.95 a month and it's really fast (as fast as the t-1 line at work) and I can still use my phone and be on-line.

I didn't realize you can get DSL for that cheap, I guess I will price Verizon to see how much they charge in my area.

ETA: Verizon cannot do my area yet. Next.....:)

We get our cable internet, cable television, and local phone from our cable company (Knology). If you get cable for your television you could see if your company offers internet as well. I know that you said you just needed dial-up, but the price on the bundle of all the services was very good compared to getting them each separately.

I have also heard good things about DSL through Verizon and BellSouth. I know that some companies have a choice of speeds - you pay less for a slower connection and more if it's faster.

When we had dial-up we had good luck just using a local company, just looked it up in the phone book, we also had an easier time getting help when we needed it with set-up, etc. I don't recommend Walmart (they may be with AOL now, I don't know), they were very difficult to cancel, I had to call back twice and I had to be extremely rude to get them to stop offering me stuff and cancel it.

I have had dial up before and it was slow, but not so slow that I couldn't stand it. So since the internet won't be used as much all I need is dial-up. I just want it to be cheap!!

If you can get SBC Yahoo DSL its wonderful. Right now you can get it for 14.95 per month. We've had it for over 5 years with no complaints. www.sbc.com to check if its available in your area.

UPDATE: I just checked and its up to 16.99 a month. A few weeks ago they had a promo for 14.95 a month. You could ask for that promo they may give it you.

Thanks, but unfortunately I am not in their area. :(

I used highstream.net for a few years and they were just as good as any other dial up. it was only$9.95 a month. It was good but we switched to cable.

The best site for info on DSL. If you notice, there is a box in the top left corner where you can search for providers in your area. If you can get basic DSL for under $20, it's worth it.
