We have been using Verizon for at least 10 years and beginning 6 months ago our service has been working on and off and is getting worse to the point where it is not useable. Technicians are here at least twice a month. We cannot get FIOS since our house is newer (45 years old) and the wires are underground. Our neighbors have it but their house has wiring above ground. It is frustrating since the FIOS pole is 100 feet from our house. Just wondering what service anyone would recommend. Thanks!

Time-Warner - used to be sort of on/off again, but for the last year has been very dependable.

Personally, I use Optimum, because my choice was them or Verizon DSL. (My building isn't wired for FIOS.) Since I hate DSL, it wasn't much of a choice to make.

Your best bet is to first see what's even available in your area - lots of folks don't get a choice at all.

I have Brighthouse for both cable and internet, but the are the only ones available in my area, besides very slow and expensive DSL. Check and see who is available in your area OP because as the PP said, you may not have a choice.

I don't understand the issue with buried lines. Our house is 11 years old and our lines are all buried. They did come through about 7 years ago and put the FIOS cabling in through our neighborhood, but the rest of the wiring is the original cabling between the house and the box way out in our yard where the FIOS runs through. We have had great service. We had DirectTV for a while and then we went to DSL and then FIOS when that came in. FIOS is by far the best service. DSL was okay, but not great. We have tv and internet through FIOS and we really like it.

We also have a box in our basement that all our cabling (coax and phone) runs through and the FIOS box is connected to it.

Since the FIOS pole is 100 feet from your house, ask Verizon what the cost would be to connect your house to FIOS.

Comcast - Blast Internet + Basic Digital Cable w/ 1 year free HBO $73/month (will probably not keep HBO now that they are planning to roll out stand alone product next year similar to Netflix).

Many people complain about Comcast but I personally have had zero issues. They show up when they say the will and I'd say, except for weather, outages are rare. When they happen, Comcast updated their twitter so you know when it will be restored, or you can login to your account and there will be a notice there. I've probably had less than 1 per year due to their fault.

This probably varies by region, maybe we have a good crew here :)

We've had Comcast for years. It's the only "real" option here so they have a monopoly essentially. The other options are slower like satellite, Century Link, etc. We would likely switch to Verizon Fios if it was available here which I'm frankly surprised it isn't.

I hate the monopoly Comcast has and their prices, but we never have had issues with their service. We get faster speed than what we pay for and there are never any outages.

I have Time Warner and it's been fine. I haven't had any real issues. Only time I have any sort of trouble is during bad storms but that is expected.

We have Time Warner and I can't stand it. Unfortunately, it's the only thing we can get out here. We're military and move often, so we've had a variety of service providers. With Time Warner we pay more for 1/2 the speed that we had with Comcast. I'm not a fan of paying more, but it's the slow speed (and we have the fastest option they offer) that really just kills us. We've also had A LOT of issues with their cable and are hoping to switch from that soon.

I've had Cox, Qwest, and Comcast(in AZ) Verizon Fios and Brighthouse(while in Florida.

Cox has seemed overall to be good. My Verizon Fios was fast and never had trouble but I didn't have it that long(a couple months or so) but the contract was annoying and ended up costing me a lot of debt.

I would not recommend Qwest or comcast. Sadly those are only options a friend has with where she lives and both have not worked out for her but her equipment(computers) were ancient and also not fast to begin with. But when I had the Internet and cable it would randomly go out and only one or the other usually. Frustrating. :rolleyes2 Qwest too iffy as it was broadband.

We just recently switched to Time Warner (2 weeks ago). So far it has been great especially compared to what we had before. We had Windstream for almost 10 years and it was terrible. I kept being told the fastest speed available at my address in the middle of our town was 3 meg. It was super slow and expensive for what it was. Our bill is now $40 a month lower having cable/internet/phone with Time Warner than it was having Windstream for internet/phone and Directv and there is a HUGE difference in internet speed since now we have 50 meg. So far no problems.
