What if RCI Exchange doesn't come through?

That is . . . I put the points into the reservation system, but what I want never becomes available. Do my points just expire, and I lose them? Or, are they put into a hold account to be used that same year? Or, do we have to choose "someplace" to use them, or we lose them? Or . . . what's the deal with this?

If you have already banked the points into the World Passport Collection I think you have 2 years to use them or they will expire. Hopefully you are using an ongoing search and can be flexibile with your dates and resorts.
