What if one family member doesn't want to ride with LL Pass?

We are a family of 4 adults and one 12 year-old who is just starting to like some of the more ambitious rides. We booked most of the same LLMPs and LLSPs for all family members since he does want to try some new attractions. If our youngest decides he is too scared to ride something for which we have LLs, can someone else in our family use his Magic Band to ride with that pass?

Also, we did not book LLs for him for a few rides like EE and RnRC because he does not want to ride those. He is old enough to stay outside the ride and wait for us, but he is worried about getting lost in such a large place. Can we use rider switch in this situation so that someone can wait with him?

The CMs will generally not issue a rider switch pass for a 12 year old (or someone who’s tall enough) and doesn’t want to ride. One solution is to get LLs for the adults and take turns riding and waiting with the 12 year old. Another possibility to consider is finding the exit to the ride and establishing a place for him to wait for you, before you enter the ride. And a third possibility is having him go through the line with you and then having the CM at the loading dock direct him to the “chicken exit” which will lead him to a place where he can wait for you to finish the ride. And yes, if he has a LL but decides not to enter the ride line at all, one of the adults can take his MB and ride in his place.

While someone else is physically able to take his MB and ride again it is against Disney policy to use other people’s ticket media so it is not technically allowed. You can cancel his LL if the time hasn’t expired.

If he is going to walk thru the line and take the chicken exit, he can just tap in. If he isn’t going thru the line, you can explain and they will probably just let him tap in and then go wait for you. (that’s what we did when I didn’t ride Mission Space with my husband) Some rides have 2 places to tap for LL, if that’s the case I’m pretty sure I canceled in the app or you could go to the blue umbrella.
I would take him to the exit of the ride and establish where he waits while you ride.

Can you explain the benefit of tapping in if you are not going to ride? Do you have to do that in order to get new LL passes?

If his LL isn’t marked used by tapping in, you won’t be able to book another LL for him until it’s used, canceled or expires.

This is incorrect. A rider switch can always be obtained even if the height requirements are met. The situation described above is no different than having an elderly guest that is unable to ride the attraction and can’t be left alone.

Per the Disney website:
Rider Switch is appropriate in the following situations:

A Guest in the party either does not meet the boarding requirements or does not plan to ride but cannot wait outside the queue alone.

Well, in this case the OP said he could wait alone, but he was worried about getting lost.

Unfortunately, I’ve read more than one report on these forums over the years of rider switch being denied in the case of a child who was tall enough but simply too scared to ride - even though the policy has been as you quoted for all those years. Fortunately, nowadays booking LLs is a simple way to handle those situations.

If you got an LL for him but he decides not to ride, he still needs to “use” the LL to be able to get another one. He can either tap in, you can cancel it in the app, or use the cast members at the blue umbrellas to take care of it for you.

We just returned from our trip, and we were able to do rider switch with our 12 year-old at all parks for any rides for which he had LL passes but was afraid to ride. For a couple of attractions, we explained to the CM at the beginning that he had decided he was afraid to ride and nervous to wait outside alone and risk losing us, and they accommodated us with rider switch. For others, he went through the queue with us, and if he decided he didn't want to ride, he and my husband left via the "chicken exit," and the CM added a rider switch pass to his account.

I believe the attractions we used rider switch for in this way were GotG, Tron, 7DMT (yes, really!), Everest, and RnRC.
