WHAT I'D DO DIFFERENTLY...POR Sept. 2006

ampc3, GADisneyDVC, OhMari, teentoddlermom, goofyfan-12, SamIAm21, novdisneydreams, Scutapipig, Scot-n-Michelle, BeautyNBeast, ClaraBug, dandee00, PrincessV, kaw1218--Thanks for the kind words. The trip reports board is my favorite but I sadly admit that to this point I have been mostly a lurker. Now I know how much it means to know that folks are reading and enjoying. From the bottom of my heart..........thank you! :)

Those are some of the best pictures of Spectro I have ever seen! They are fabulous!

I love the picture of you and DH on the cruise -- you didn't even need to tell me the year to figure out it was late 80's. Of course I was still sporting my spiral perm in those days!

Great TR and looking forward to more!

:wave2: hi, you're reading my trip report and said we'd followed you around mostly or vice versa so I came over to check it out!! :thumbsup2

Awesome job!!

and I find it so odd that you traveled down from almost the same place and we had completely different driving routes. :confused3

We never saw the turnpike or all those billboards. we drove down I-77, around Charleston on I-26 and then 1-95 (?) to Daytona Beach then West on I-4 and we kept thinking SURELY there are billboards and such around here somewhere? FINALLY we saw one or two but that was it!!

Anyways, great report, I'll be back!!

and your dd's pictures are awesome!!

Hi Melinda,
I am looking forward to more of your trip report. Nudge, nudge. ;)
If you have any more pictures of POR, I'd love to see them. We are planning to try a moderate next trip, but I'm having a hard time to decide which one. :confused3 CSR or POR...hmmm

Great report! We had orginially wanted to surprise our DS with the trip too, but I couldn't contain myself. :) I love the tips at the end of your posts too.

Great TR so far!

I LOVED  the pic of you and DH on the ship! Very brave to elope on that trip. What was your Mom's response?!? Guess there would be a part of me sad :sad2: to have missed the wedding, but thrilled  I didn't have to go through planning it! (Just had DD get married and it was ALOT of work!)

Can't wait to read more and see more great pics! :cool1:

Really enjoying your TR but I want to know what your Mom said when you told her you eloped!

We had a similar experience at PORiverside in 2005. Although the CM who checked us in told me our room number, he neglected to tell me where in Parterre Place the room was. The Mansions are gynormous and in my estimation, the room numbers make no sense. But we finally found the room.

That notwithstanding, I love PORiverside. It's a great place.

I'm impressed you were able to keep the secret from you son. I can't keep a Disney secret. I tried not telling my wife we were staying at Wilderness Lodge. That lasted all of 30 minutes.

Your TR is a good read. I'm looking forward to more. :moped:

Great report...can't wait for th next chapter.

We stayed at POR in 2004....AB27....LOVED IT!!!

Thanks for posting everyone! Would gladly post faster but I have this "job" thing I have to attend to...hopefully lots more this weekend...
MomPlanner22--Mimi is flattered by your estimation of her photography skills! Thank you!
jrasmom--Loving your report as well...thanks for the compliment on Mimi's pics. She was the primary photographer on this trip. Can't wait to see how your week went...hope it's not your last trip!
dandee00--Glad you like the trip report...POR is beautiful but...click here ...these are better than we can do...
T-i-double-g-err, scottishtink, 01Sweetpea...Thanks for reading...glad you're still with me after the lengthy history details!
Convert...Surprise was more for my sanity than for his pleasure :)
DisneyObsession, Cass...will PM you asap re: my mother's reaction to the elopement... ;)
ZZUB...my favorite of all trip reporters...affirmative on the cheesesteak..thanks for posting....can't wait to hear more about THE LODGE...

Yes dont stop now your trip report is really good. The pictures of the parade
are fantastic! I bet your kids must have been overjoyed.

Wow, those Disney beds are comfy but no Mickey/Stitch wake up call will be necessary today. The rooster crows at 6:00 a.m. like always and I get up to make coffee. Now I like my own strong, brewed coffee with whole milk…no Nescafe for me, thank you very much. I shower, dress, and head down to the food court for real milk to go with my real coffee. It’s quiet, dark, and peaceful outside in the mornings at POR. There are a handful of people out on the coffee walk…all carrying one or more refillable mugs. I grab a couple of mini Mickey priced milks and head back to the room.

The coffee is good and I enjoy it outside as the sun comes up over Ole Man Island. It’s going to be a gorgeous day today…not a cloud in the sky. I go back in to finish getting ready before I wake the gang. I hope whoever thought of that curtain between the sink area and the sleeping area got a bonus. Genius! At last I turn on the TV and let Stacy wake everyone with the top 7 must-sees.

The kids are moving because…well…we’re in Disney World but DH’s not moving so fast. At this point, there’s something you should know about the dynamic for our family vacation. I like see/do/go/experience vacations and DH likes sit/sip/relax/do nothin’ vacations. But he loves me and agrees that this long awaited vacation can actually be a Disney vacation. I respect the fact that he works hard so I will not push him to do anything he does not want to do this week….it’s his vacation, too. But….today is our first day and the kids and I want to get to park opening. We hurry him along a bit.

We’re running late for rope drop when we get to the car at 8:45 a.m. Now if you recall the bus service was terrible at the Hotel Royal Plaza on our last trip so we think taking the car to the parks will be faster. We walk/run to the car and everybody’s in and buckled. DH: “Hey, there are the nail clippers! I’ve been looking for those.” Takes off his shoes and begins to clip his toenails. (insert the sound of clock ticking…waiting silently….ticking….) Shoes back on. OK, we’re off.

Now the parking at MGM is a might farther away from the gates than I had remembered however the Disney bus stops are remarkably close to the entrance. Oh, well. We are in the park by 9:15 and head quickly to Rockin’ Rollercoaster. We’re through the gate and DS and Mimi are all about riding the coaster but Emily is having cold feet. I tell her she can come with us because there is a last-second exit on every ride in every park. She hesitantly comes along. We see the preshow…fast limo…alright! Emily leaves here to wait in the exit/store area.

At last, I get to ride a big rollercoaster! I’m excited but a little nervous. DH and DS are right behind Mimi and me. We’re off……fast and fabulous. We all love it! Emily is waiting and we hurry to see the photo. I encourage Mimi to take the redneck ride photo. She is shocked and declines. We hurry on to the Tower of Terror. As we head up the walkway to the door, Emily has a complete meltdown and is sobbing…….

DO….remember to bring 4-6 cup coffee filters and some of your favorite coffee with you if you'd like to make good coffee in the room. Do take the Disney buses to MGM. It’s much closer and faster than parking your car. Do, for crying out loud, clip your toenails the night before so you can get to the park at opening. ;)

DON’T…worry if you chicken out at the last minute or if you're pregnant. On every ride, you can stay with your party, see the preshow, and exit where the ride loads. Go ahead!

As much as we loved the Lodge, I actually missed my mornings at PORiverside. Not that mornings at the Lodge weren't equally great, they were just different. I grew fond of the morning stroll across the "river" to the food court for "coffee." My coffee walks at the Lodge just weren't the same.

RE: crappy Disney coffee. It occured to me that we could bring some good stuff, and here's where I'm completely ridiculous, but for me, the crappy coffee is part of the experience. Like paying $2.50 for a coke or $6 for a burger. Or $140 a night for a dressed up Comfort Inn. Or turbo flush toilets. It's just part of the experience. If I drank good coffee in Disney, then it wouldn't be Disney. Also, and here's the bottom line, I'm not making coffee on vacation. That's like work or something. Vacation means someone else makes the coffee. Even if I have to walk over the river and through the woods, so to speak.

Sorry to hijack lexmelinda!
ZZUB, it may well be ridiculous, but I know EXACTLY what you're saying! I brought all my usual coffee supplies - fresh ground organic French Roast, skim milk, ground cinnammin, raw sugar - and wound up plopping the pre-filled Nescacrud filter in each morning. Turns out, I don't want to make coffee on vacation!
