Just back from the world and was SO disappointed with the dole whips we had. They used to be the consistency of soft serve ice cream and now they are like very soft sherbet. I think they are also sweeter now and a little less "pineappley". I asked the CM at the counter if they had changed and she said there have been many changes in the 3 years she has worked there.

First, the portion size shrank. Then, it shrank again. Now the formulation has been changed. We have always made a big deal to get our dole whips every trip but now........not sure we will make the effort.

Anyone else had one recently and one sometime ago to compare?

I had my first one while visiting the Polynesian. I thought it was pretty good, but of course I have nothing to compare it to.

that is so funny that you posted this...because I thought the same thing when we got our Dole Whips a few weeks ago....of course I just attributed it to the fact that I had not had one in over a year that I forgot the taste but I too thought it was more sherbert like....here's a picture I took for my scrapbook....

It was a must-try for me back in Feb based on all the comments it gets here at the DIS. Don't know if it was because it was cold that night or what but I didn't think it was all that. Pineapple flavored ice cream is all it is.:confused3

My DW, DS and I had Dole Whips last week at the MK. My DW and I like the pineapple/vanilla. My son likes the all pineapple. Although the portion was smaller, they tasted the way we remebered them - still delicious. :)

have yet to have one yet. Don't know what all the hype is about.

Is the dole whip just ice cream or is it supposed to be a dole whip float? the only photos i have seen are dole whip floats, which i thought looked good, but i have never had one.:confused3

catgyrl129,

They do come as a float but we always just get the Dole Whip in a cup as it is pictured above.

Anyone else have an experience to share?

Based on your's and the OP's description of it being more sherbert-like than soft-serve and tasting sweeter and less pineapplely, and looking at the picture, I'm guessing (a) the "mix" wasn't measured properly, (b) the machine wasn't set to the proper tempurature for freezing based on outside humidity ,(c) not enough air introduced during freezing process, and (d) all of the above.

Dole Whips are not ice cream; they are a shelf stable non-dairy dessert mix. They are not exclusive to DL and WDW; they are served other places throughout the country. It comes in pineapple flavor, but also vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, raspberry, mango, and orange.

For the pineapple flavor, the ingredients are: Sugar, Dextrose, Pineapple Crystals, Partially hydrogenated soybean oil, Stabilizers (Cellulose, Locust Bean, Guar, Xanthan, Karaya Gum, Pectin), Sodium Silico Aluminate, Vegetable Fiber, Citric Acid, Artificial Flavor, Sodium Caseinate (a milk derivative), Mono & Diglycerides, Sodium Citrate, Salt, Dipotassium Phosphate, Artificial Color Including F.D. & C. Yellow #6.

The mix is manufactured by Precision Foods. If you have noticed any changes in the formulation, then the change was made by Precision Foods. I didn't notice any difference at all -- as the PP mentioned, it may be that the mix wasn't prepared correctly.

We get Dole Whip floats every time we go to DL, and I had 2 at WDW. They were very much the same, but DL was better because they added a maraschino cherry and a paper umbrella to the float for decoration. Otherwise, the taste was the same.

It's all because of the DDP.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Seriously though, when I was there last Sept, I too thought it seemed a little different. This past April though, it seemed to be back to the way I had remembered it being, so I'm guessing maybe the mix is just off some days. I always get the float, so the consistency of the ice cream isn't quite as big a deal to me, but last Sept. it did seem a little sweeter than it had in the past. I still can't imagine a trip to MK with a Dole Whip Float.

Now that sounds delicious!:rotfl2:

I dream of dole whip floats. There's been nothing better then a sitting down with an ice cold dole whip float on a hot September day. Ah, heaven. :cloud9: I can't wait to have another one!!!

Katiebell is correct....

As far as the consistency issue, there are a few things that could cause it to be softer....

1. if it were purchased early in the day
2. if it were a new batch
3. the temperature/humidity outside

I always have the Dole Whip mix on hand here at home (in several flavors).....YUM!

I agree. They're nice and all, but my Dole Whip float didn't live up to the hype.

Sounds really healthy. We all need our Vegetable Fiber when we get older.;)

I had to get my fix in early May and I was disappointed -- it was everything I remembered!! Yummy!!
