What has Disney removed that makes you the saddest?

Adding on to the "cookie cutter" notion, I miss all the resort specific merchandise you use to be able to buy at all the different resorts. Like the resort specific mugs, ornaments, etc. They used to have a much bigger variety of items but now it's just all the same generic made in China stuff in all of the resorts. Same with the parks too. Not much variety going on anymore.

me too! I love some of my old merchandise from back in the day:lmao: with specific designs..... it doesn't exist much anywhere now,and that's a shame! those of us who go more than once in a lifetime get bored by all the 'same looking' stuff.... I want the hotel themed stuff back!

<lump in throat/ fighting back tears while reading this thread>

Whoever said the word "Buffeteria"! YES! I LOVED that word - it was so unique and so "Disney'! :yay:

Also miss the amazing topiaries that lined the highways throughout the World. I remember a dragon, elephant family etc.

DH and I were just talking about all our trips in the late1990's/early 2000's. that was just the Disney heyday for us: Legacy FP, lots of neat classes were offered (we signed up for a pastry demonstration of the GF) Our kids will never know that kind of Disney

We just met Tink & Rosetta last week in Adventureland.

Maybe they are rumored to be removed, but they are definitely still there as of last week.

Tink has moved to the Main St Theatre (where the Princesses used to meet) And her other Fairy friends will no longer be there

I have a feeling that the last half of SSE is getting a revamp and the cartoon is there to distract us while they work on it. That's my hope anyway. Two way video conferencing used to to be so futuristic but now its super common so I imagine they will have to come up with something else next. I actually enjoy the cartoon and we always record them and laugh our heads off, but its with the assumption that something else is coming.

And anyway thanks for clarifying that for me! I hear Tomorrows Child come up on my Disney Pandora all the time and I knew it must be a ride because the end (where you unload) is really long, but I couldn't remember it myself. So thanks to you, I see that it is an older SSE. I love that channel. It pops up with older theme park versions of ones like the old Tiki Room, POTC, O Canada, etc. I always get excited when it plays something from the parks...

Tomorrow's Child is a very moving song and along with the last scenes (which were removed) left an impact as we traveled back to the end of the ride. I think that Disney could have somehow added the "computer scenes" and left the classic scenes as well. The "cartoon" was cute for the first couple of times but now....not so much. Glad that I could clarify the song for you:flower3:

In no particular order of importance:

1.) Horizons

2.) World of Motion

*** Having said both of the above, I do like TT and MS, but wish they somehow could have been added without destroying these classics. Water under the bridge, right?

3.) Journey Into Imagination

4.) EPCOT Fountain that was removed for Leave a Legacy

5.) Ratatouille from Chefs de France

6.) The previous voice for the TTA ("Paging Mr. Morrow... Mr. TOM MORROW... your party from Saturn has arrived, would you please give them a "ring"?)

7.) Original Contemporary Gameroom

8.) Concourse Steakhouse @ Contemporary

9.) The benches and trees that were replaced in the Grand Canyon Concourse in exchange for a horendous gift shop.

10.) The Parrots that once resided in the Poly lobby

10.5) Is it too early to list the Polynesian Lobby Waterfall that is currently being demolished??? Too soon???

11.) Being able to ride in the front of the Monorail.

12.) Original Illuminations

13.) Tapestry of Nations parade

14.) The gift shop inside Cinderella's Castle that is now Bippity Boppity Big Bucks

15.) Penny arcade on Mainstreet / Mainstreet Bakery

Progress isn't always good...

For me, the list begins and ends with The Adventurers Club. Far and away the absolute dumbest decision that WDW ever made. To this day I cannot fathom why they did it.

It was one of the THE single best thing in the entire place. Everything about it was perfect. It was a truly unique experience that you really can't find anywhere else on the planet. I loved ending my nights there. WHY, DISNEY, WHY!!!???

Tonyz, I fixed your post. :thumbsup2 And I couldn't agree more! My post to this question asked exactly the same thing about this: "Why, Disney, WHY!!!??"

Saddest thing for my two 20-something boys and me...taking Splash Mountain out of evening EMHs. :sad2:

We got back recently after a many years hiatus and I must say so much has changed. As they say though you can never really go back home again.:worried:

There are many things I miss from my teen years like tapestry of nations and wonders of life pavilion. However there were so many little things this trip missing that added up to make us long for the days not so long ago.

The biggest for us was probably Main street bakery - I was really surprised at how much a difference this made in the general feel of MK. I love starbucks but smelling it down main street was odd and the old smell of cinnamon rolls and deliciousness was missing and noticeable. The general stand around and waiting for your coffee like I was at my starbucks at home was very un-magical. I now see why people were in an uproar a few years ago about it.

Fastpass- with come back any time after time posted was very much missed and changed the way we saw Disney. I understand not being able to come back any time but the general feel of fastpass+ just really changed the feeling of Disney as a whole for us. I won't say it is the worst thing ever as I am sure it works for those people who like to plan.

We missed the FOOD. The dining used to be so much better. With the outrageous price of the food for food that plainly just sucks. The food used to be part of the draw for us on our vacation. Even our favorite Crystal Palace just kind of was blah. They are trying to feed so many people and are going with very bland taste. There is no spice to the food offered. Wish they still had restaurants that specialized in food instead of massed produced food.

Last for me was the NAPKINS! LOL I so know people roll their eyes but sitting down and seeing brown plain napkin, well the magic is just gone. It is a sign that gone are the little things that made Disney special.

I will say seeing the new improvements to Fantasyland really was a little sign of hope that they are still some people making good decisions at Disney instead of the corporate dorks just wanting to take things away and suck a dollar out of everyone.

Main Street Bakery. The REAL MSB. This one still boggles the mind to me... WHY take one of the most iconic, beloved, always full of people, parts of Disney and remove it/ ruin it? they could have put that Starbucks anywhere, but it had to replace MSB???

I really miss the smells from there and the yummy treats, the morning breaks we always took there. It's awful now. Packed, slow, not magical at all. When my Dsis and I were there in the fall, it was the longest line/ wait of the whole trip!

I also still really miss If You Had wings.

This. I don't like seeing these chain establishments coming in and replacing something as popular as the Main Street Bakery. I don't mind them putting a Starbucks or the like somewhere else, just don't want it replacing something "iconic" as you put it. :sad2: My worry is this will start a new trend.

Oh my do I have a list of them. However, I'll confine myself to to just a few. I also miss the Wonders of Life Pavilion. Believe it or not but "Cranium Command" helped me to explain my son's ADHD to him so he could understand why he should take his medication. Believe me, he understood and made sure he didn't try to "fake" taking his meds the rest of the trip or we would have had more major meltdowns than we did.

I also miss having a cold chicken box lunch at Aunt Polly's on Tom Sawyer Island. It was so great to get away from the crowds for lunch.

Discovery Island (was that the name?) The boat Captain let my son "drive" the boat over for a relaxing walk through nature trails where my kids (now 25 and 26) remember vividly the encounter with a Patagonian Cavey on the trail.

Those are the ones attached to my memories the most. However, I also miss shade, benches, Horizons, full pavilions in Epcot, characters without lines, Alien Encounter and Honey I Shrunk the Audience (I'm likely the only one on that last one but it made more sense to the kids to visit the play area later in the trip after seeing the 3D attraction).

Oh, Tom Sawyer's Island and Aunt Polly's. Pre-kids, we would go over to the Island SPECIFICALLY to get the turkey sandwiches and a lemonade. Sitting on the verandah, eating a tasty sandwich, watching the hub-bub of the MK, but feeling removed from the noise...was amazing. I was so sad (we both were) when that became just vending machines. So sad.

I miss the days before 'free' dining promotions and the heavy marketing of the dining plans so severely degraded, from all aspects, the dining experience throughout WDW.

I miss the many entertainment acts in Epcot that have gone by the wayside...among them, the Ziti Sisters, the Kristos, the Living Statues, Remy, Le Mime Roland, and especially Masquerade in Italy.

Tapestry of Nations, sadly gone.

Spaceship Earth, before its current iteration.

All of this!

The Lights of Winter at Epcot:

And this.

While I think change is a fantastic thing, the things they are changing make no sense. Fix the broken stuff...not the successful stuff.

I'll go with Legacy Fast Pass.

And just reading this I realized that Starbucks replaced MSB. That means on my next trip, I'll be missing that place the most. I always got one of their awesome cinnamon roll sticky buns. Stupid Starbucks. Don't you think if I wanted to visit them, I'd go around any corner? Not that I ever would.:sad2:

Christmas stuff: Lights of Wonder; Epcot tree lighting; county Bears Jamboree Christmas show; Santa hat on Mickey tower at DHS; cookies, chestnuts, drinks and entertainment at the hotels each night during the holidays.

I miss all the music from Epcot..Listen to the Land, Horizons, Universe of Energy, Tomorrow's Child, etc. I still have the cd with all of these and listen to it.
Rides -> Horizons, World of Motion are the top ones
Magic store and penny arcade on Main street
River country

We used to stay at the Fairway Villas all the time too. When I was young they would stock up the entire fridge and pantry, gave us travel bags, tickets to either Top of the World, Luau, or Hoop Dee Doo, all just included in the package.

Also we used to eat at Canada all the time when it was a 'buffeteria'. My mom loved the black forest cake there.

The things I miss most are:

1) SPECTROMAGIC! :( :( :( the music for this was SOOO much better than the music for MSEP in my opinion, and I liked the float quality and themes better too.

2) Main Street Bakery - I know discussing the new Starbucks is opening a whole other can of worms, but I wish they had at least kept the cinnamon rolls and other popular items (I know there's cinnamon rolls in gaston's tavern but it's not the same :p )

3) PUSH the talking trash can - last I heard he was no longer delighting surprised guests when they tried to throw something away?

4) I also miss the old version of characterpalooza where a bunch of random characters could be found by the animation studio in DHS. The new character meet in streets of America seems very short and I liked how in the old version each character had actual orderly lines.

  • sponteneity
  • cleanliness
  • imagination

Yes to all of the above, and especially to item 1!!! I am sorry, but I personally find that it's terrible to have to plan down to every minute of every day so far in advance if you don't want to contend with big line-ups everywhere, and then stress 'cause you have to change things around at the last minute! FastPass+ might be wonderful to some, but honestly? not so much when you consider that it's almost like being in school again, with set times for classes and meals. And I hate having to book an ADR 180 days out, not even getting what I want unless I'm up at the crack of dawn on my computer to make bookings with my credit card in hand. It's too regimented to be a fun holiday anymore, IMHO...

So yeah, I really REALLY miss the spontaneity! :(
