What happens to OKW when all of the 50 yr contracts run out in 2032 or 34? Are they gonna start reselling contracts for another 50 years? or does OKW just become another resort? And what about the other DVC's and their 50 yr contracts?

I'm just fishing here. I want to see if anyone got the same line from their guide.

The contracts for OKW, VB, HH, BWV. VWL and BCV all expire on January 31, 2042.

At this time, DVC has not disclosed what will become of the resorts after that date. Some (DVC management) have expressed the likleyhood that DVC will bulldoze the properties and rebuild something else, others here have suggested that DVC will offer extensions to the current contracts (I doubt it) and others have suggested that Disney will continue the resorts - as they are at that time - for cash reservations.

At this time, no one knows for sure. Most likely the decision has yet to be made and it's quite possible that the decision will be made by someone still in gradeschool now.

At this point, after January 31, 2042 , only SSR will still be a DVC resort and no one else will have any options for reserving (and SSR owners might not have any options other than SSR).

Stay tuned!! :)

OOPS. I did mean 2042 or 44. I was told that no resort will be over 50 years old. So they would knock them down and start over. Anyone told anything else?

We were told the life expectancy of any of the buildings at WDW was 50 years. After that it wasn't worth maintaining them. If I had to guess they'll bulldoze them and start over.

The balancing act will be to maintain the resorts to a level that we and other WDW guests (who sometimes pay cash for the same rooms) have come to expect with reasonable dues. That's the "hard" part in my mind. On Jan 30, 2042, the DVC resorts should be booked to capacity as deluxe resorts and a week later they are going to be "bulldozed?" There will be a middle ground, and hopefully one of my sons will be the head of the Disney Corporation making that decision!

I'm not sure why everyone is so surprised - or doubtful - that DVC would bulldoze the resorts after 50 years. In my OTHER favorite vacation destination - Las Vegas - they routinely blow up older properties and replace them with new ones; this help keeps the place refreshed and interesting. And let's be honest: in 2042 and 2054, the existing DVC resorts will be half a century old, with tired 'been there done that' themes, non-trivial maintenance issues and outdated construction & technology.

Dr... Understand the analogy, but I think it is not a completely clean comparison. Taking OKW, BWV, BCV and VWL out of the system simultaneously takes a bunch of beds out of the WDW inventory. High-revenue beds at that. They didn't build them all at the same time, imagine it would be a challenge to re-build them all at the same time.

I disagree that in 2042 & 2054 the resorts will be wrecking-ball ready. We're all paying to maintain them, why wouldn't Disney keep them up? There are probably hundreds of resort/hotels in operation well in excess of 50 years of age and while they may have lost whatever made them "modern" in their day, they will mostly share that real estate beauty "location." Several years ago I made a number of trips to Victoria, British Columbia and stayed at the Empress (a grand old Victorian-era "railroad" hotel)... The rooms were small, outdated and very expensive. The location is wonderful. Ditto Crescent Lake.

My "interest" (legally and literally) in BWV may run out in 2042, but Disney's interest in the dirt BWV is built on won't. My hope (I'll be 74 come' 42) at this point is that they develop a recapitalization plan for all the resort locations and that in some manner sequence them so that they aren't all out of play at the same time. I imagine they won't sell "extensions," that would be an accounting nightmare.

Like I've read on another post... The exec who will make this decision is probably sitting in a grade school somewhere right now. Our "family" plan is to hold off any more add-ons until the "next" property is developed, which will hopefully leap-frog SSR in lease termination date.
