What happens when people do not pay?

I had read in another post here on DIS that sometimes FP+ open up when it is time for the final payment to be due; meaning that people do not make their final payment and their plans are cancelled? How does this work? Does it erase their picks at midnight? What would be a good strategy if you were trying to get a FP+ to the FoF parade on December 19th?

I don't believe there is any set time and people cancel at various times around these dates, but typically for packages it was at the 45 day mark and for room only it's 5 days out. It may now be 30 days out for packages though, I'm not certain if that took place yet or not.

Just yesterday for example I checked a few times throughout the day for FP for 1 week out. Peter Pan and 7DMT came up several times throughout the day. Part of this may be cancellations or just people tweaking their plans as their trip gets closer.

No one here really knows. I'm sure there is a mechanism built into the MyMagic+ system that makes alterations to the available FP+s for any given day based on a range of variables including cancellations but unless someone here is inside working on the system it will only be an educated guess. Those alterations could just as easily be real time as part of a scheduled batch process.

The best advice is to jump online or on the app a few time a day and try.

Just a heads up there will be no FoF parade on the 19th. Only the Christmas parade during the day and MSEP at night.

30 days officially starts in 2016, but people are granted extensions past the 45 day mark all the time. As for FoF, your best bet is to watch from Frontierland. It's less crowded, and it starts there, so you can be on to other things before it ever reaches the FP area.

ETA: Just saw the above post. Not sure which way the Christmas parade runs, but regardless, I'd still plant myself in Frontierland and avoid Main Street like the plague. Lol

I have never understood the desire to see parades on Main Street, it's so darn crowded.

I know for a fact that they do not cancel FP at 45 days, or even 30 for non paying package gueats. I was just working with a client who didn't have the money for final payment and we got an extension for 30 days out. She still didn't have the money so we just waited until we got the "Drop dead" email from Disney and she paid at about 15 days out. She just got back and all of her FP were intact.

I'm with you - I've never intentionally staked out a spot there early (the SUN, the CROWDS. . . ) but last trip I was the only one in my large group who wanted to make a point to catch the parade. We were in Tomorrowland maybe 1/2 hour before parade time, so I grabbed my 7 year old and we took a potty break, then headed over to Main Street to see if we could just catch a few minutes (I assumed standing behind the pack). We found a spot right near the hub where DS could sit about 2 kids back from the curb and I could stand to give him some shade. When that parade came through and I started snapping pictures. . . WOW! We were so close and the castle was our backdrop. It was amazing. I still don't know if I'd stake out hours ahead, but it was by far the best parade viewing I've ever had.

If you had tickets attached to a package and you cancelled the tickets, THAT would release the FPs. No tickets, no FPs. Nothing else would automatically erase them - the person who booked them would have to cancel them.

I also think that packages are not automatically dropped at 45 days.

We also started watching the parade from Frontierland around three years ago. It is a much more enjoyable experience and you don't have to get there an hour before the parade.

We like the afternoon parades in Frontierland, but stake out the hub for the nighttime one.

I think the 45 days thing is that after that people can't get their deposit refunded, so for those that are on the fence they are going probably commit one way or the other by 45 days. If people are going to cancel, most of them will do it before they can't get their deposit back, so I would assume that around 45 days you would see a higher number of people cancelling in order to get their deposits back. Once they cancel, then their FP+ would go back in, I assume. So, if you can't get what you want at 60 days, that sweet spot between 45 and 30 days when offsite people can make their selections would be a great time to look at what others have cancelled before the next wave of people get to make their selections.
