Does it spend 3 hours going round and round and round on the carousel? Or when you offer to take a bump, do they manage to get your luggage adjusted too? I would hate to get there and have my luggage disappear due to a thief.

The luggage will go on your original flight. After it rides the baggage carousel they will gather it up and put it in front of the baggage office. It's not real secure but I haven't had any problems even with expensive equipment.

Some larger airports, like O'Hare, have locked storage areas for unclaimed luggage (at least United does). I look for opportunities to get "bumped" (if the price is right!) and when I get home I just check with baggage claim. Normally, my luggage is locked in the bin, someone unlocks it and I'm on my way.

They were able to spot our bright green luggage as it was being loaded onto the plane and we were able to have it with us when we took a Delta bump.

We took a bump Jan 2, 04. The luggage went on the original flight and was at the SONG luggage area in JFK when we landed. While everyone else was wating for the luggage, we got ours and headed out.

I've been on a flight in which a person would only agree to be voluntarily bumped if they retrieved his luggage. They did, not sure if had already been loaded on the plane.

If you do get bumped, as said in the other posts, your luggage will go without you. Make sure to ask the airline if they give any vouchers for incidentals. On an AirTran flight 4 families gave up their seats since the flight was full. The woman ahead of me, who had obviously done this before, asked about it and the airline gave us $25.00 per person to buy clothes, toothbrush, whatever you wanted. This was $100.00 for my family!! On top of vouchers for bfast, lunch and dinner and a free night at the airport hotel and free roundtrip tickets. I don't think the airline would have offered if the woman had not asked about it. Airlines probably vary on this policy, AirTran is awesome in my opinion, so they may be the only ones doing it, but it doesnt hurt to ask.
