What happens to our points?

Hi all,

We are from Canada and hoping that we will be able to come for an August 2021 trip. We will not be able to come if the Canada quarantine is still in place so we have been holding off on booking our room. Today when I checked availability I see that things are disappearing so am feeling like we need to book something. We have 230 banked points, 230 current year and the 115 we can borrow. What happens if I use 332 of our points (the 230 banked and 102 current year) and have to cancel? Will I be able to bank the 102 points from the current year or do they have to then be used in the current year? The 230 that were banked can we still transfer to RCI? Can we transfer the 230 that we borrowed to someone else if we cancel? Can we transfer the 102 points that we used? So many things to think about!

Thank you for any advice.

What is your use year? I am in Canada with an Oct UY. I had both banked 2019 points expiring the end of Sept and 2020 points used for a booing to Aulani August, but figured that was likely not going to happen. I read on these boards that MS is extending non-US members expiring banked points, so I called and MS confirmed that if I cancelled my trip they would extend the expiring banked points until May 31 of 2022. They also noted that I should cancel and bank the 2020 points before the end of the banking deadline later this month, as they would not be able to extend those. I did all of that, rather than risk losing the points.

We have a February use year.

I don't have a lot of recommendations, but you might also be able to rent out any points that you can't immediately utilize. That way at least you have the cash and can use for other trips (OR to rent extra points when you do go to disney)

The February UY makes things easier. If it were me, I would
  • book something for August in the hopes that the border improves
  • not borrow for that reservation in case the border does not improve
  • make a final decision before 30 days out to avoid holding
Things seem to be changing quickly and for the better in the lower 48. From what I understand, Canada's vaccine distribution is maybe a month or two behind us, and two months from now is mid July---so right around that 30 day mark. If border crossings are relaxed by then, take the trip. If they are not: cancel the trip, bank the 2021 UY points into 2022, and rent out the banked 2020 points. If you can't rent them, then and only then would I deposit them to RCI.
