What happens to DVC rooms 60 days out?

In another thread, there is some discussion about what happens to DVC inventory at the 60 day mark. Here's my understanding:

MOST "unnoccupied" rooms are passed to CRO. DVC holds some out for breakage, contingency, and to accommodate last minute bookings (but not much), IF they're not generally booked to capacity. They use their historical data to guesstimate at all of that, and what it might be. The rest go off to CRO.

Is that correct?

Actually, I think all rooms unreserved at 60 are passed to CRO as breakage inventory, but they can be "reclaimed" by DVC if needed for point reservations. Al in all, breakage is likely a very small percentage of the rooms turned over to CRO, as the vast majority of DVC inventory rooms will be booked by 60 days.

The reason I wonder about that is because we've seen, when someone is looking to make a "short term" (under 60 days) ressie at a DVC resort during more busy times of the year, that they've been unable to book via points but can book the same room for cash via CRO.

If there was any mechanism for "return" of inventory to DVC, from CRO, I don't think we would/could see that. Right?

I'm assuming that CRO has to withhold SOMETHING for breakage, in that case. Likely you're right..it's a small number.

We've also seen SOME people booking WAY under 60 days. So there has to be some inventory to pull from...so EVERYTHING can't go to CRO.

I'm trying to piece this all together from the POS and what I've read on the DIS....

But, we don't know that those cash rooms showing at 60 days or less were from breakage/non-use of DVC in the first place. If they were from member trades, or Disney owned inventory, they couldn't be reclaimed by DVC. So you'd have to know if there were any rooms turned over at 60 days at all.

Good point! I hadn't thought of that. Hmmm...now you got me thinking.

There are several kinds of inventory. Inventory not owned by members can't be rented by members for points - but DVD can "rent" those rooms to CRO - so they might be available for cash, but not available for short term reservations. Inventory that has been used by members to trade has already been used - and DVC has "sold" those units to CRO to recoup the trade cost - those can't be reclaimed either (although I suspect that these are the units that can be reclaimed by guides working their special magic when you are purchasing....they trade time now for time later - but you can't do that often or it screws up the use year accounting really quickly - its a rob Peter to pay Paul situation.). Breakage inventory can be reclaimed from CRO - and that is where the short notice reservations come from.

We recently added a Friday and Sat. Studio at Hilton Head within those last 60 days. We are staying on points. The DVC rep on the phone said DVC was able to "reclaim" this from CRO. We were also able to add a 1 bdrm on Vero Beach on the front of the trip last minute (well, within 60 days) but that was available.
