What happens if you rent and an emergency comes up?

This has probably asked a hundred times, but I don't know if their are any options for the person renting a villa that has a last minute emergency and can't go. I have a feeling that the renter just loses out? This is the only thing I worry about because a lot can happen if you rent 11 months out.

That is between you and the party you rent from. I have told my renters that the points are thiers. I would be more than willing to try and rebook another date. I would be even willing to try to re-rent them for them, but in the end the points are thiers to use and lose. So far no emergencies have occurred.

I second what Robin said. Also, you can buy trip insurance, and I try to make sure that I send the info on trip insurance to the renter along with the confirmation letter. Whether or not they choose to purchase the insurance is up to them. Even if you use the insurance, I think that they only reimburse $5/point. I've rented twice, and neither person needed or paid for trip insurance.

I don't blame you for being concerned. The person renting to you has the same concern as well. There is an element of risk for both parties. As TNRobin suggests, most people will have to make it a "final sale" with you but could work to try and reschedule the trip before the points expire. Unlike a hotel, the renter is also working against deadlines where the points will have no value tothem either.

If you are not truly committed to the trip, I would suggest not renting at 11 months but waiting until closer to the trip when your plans are firm. A true emergency is one thing, a change of plans is another.

We have never had a vacation where there was an emergency , but we are getting up there, with elderly parents, grandchilden etc. But then again if you have airfare there is a chance of losing that too. It is good to hear that this doesn't happen too often and the owner will work with you. Is there a list of people that have good reviews of renting their points?

This is certainly between the two parties. I think most people that rent their points make them non refundable but will work with you if something happens within the limitations of the points available.
