What exactly happens if you "ignore" a poster?

I know this isn't new to this version of the boards, but I'm poking around a lot more trying to get my bearings. What happens if I add someone to my "people you ignore" list? If they're in the middle of a thread I'm reading, will I just be missing their posts? (Which may be good for my blood pressure sometimes, but would probably make me lose the flow of a conversation. . . )

Awesome, thank you! What happens when you "follow" a poster?

I think this is like the old friends list, if you click on your name you can then click to see a list of who you follow. The list is a quick way to see those profiles and send messages, etc.

If you ignore someone do they still get to see everything you post and look at your profile details?

Yes. All "ignore" does is hide their posts so you don't see them.

There are certain features in the profile that are not public unless we make them so, like gender & birth dates. Emails are not public. Other information that people put, like homepages, etc., shouldn't be in their profiles if the poster wants to maintain basic anonymity from other posters. There is no mechanism to share with some and not with others.

So I can only make information unavailable to everyone, or available to everyone, correct?

There is a place in the Privacy settings where you can restrict "details on your profile page" to "People You Follow Only." I haven't used it so I'm not sure what/how much is available. You can also similarly restrict who is able to send you PMs.

Thank you. I haven't used those features, so didn't realize.

I came across it just poking around one day. I've tried the options for "Show your online status" (the little green tag in the corner of your avatar) and "Show your current activity" (shows what thread you are reading or what time you logged out), but I haven't tried the option to limit the profile information. I think with that option others can still click the avatar for the quick info but it doesn't allow them the option for "Profile Page." Not sure, though, since it's impossible to check for yourself! I fully agree with the recommendation to not include anything personal on your profile if you don't want others to see/know.
