I beleive it was called River Country. What happened to it? Are there any future plans for it? What was wrong with it to close in the first place? :confused3

They had to get rid of it because something happened to the water in that park, and they couldn't do anything to fix it so they just finally closed it. It took them about 4 years to finally announce that it wouldn't be coming back.

I never heard that, but I guess i always figured with typhoon lagoon and blizard beach they really don't need to hire a whole extra staff to run an old water park. I've never been there but i hear it was nice. Any way its closed and never coming back.

River Country was quite old, as far as water parks go, and they build two modern water parks to replace it. It was open seasonally for years, and then less and less as guests consistently chose to visit one of the newer water parks instead. It must cost a large amount of money to maintain the equipment for a water park, especially one that is so old, so it must not make much sense to spend all that money for just a few weeks per year when they'd need to have had the park open.

They should wall off River Country from Bay Lake, drain it and give it a pool surface. It would then be like the other water parks, and much easier to maintain.

They could then use River Country at the pool for Ft. Wilderness. The pool they have now is the lamest on the property.

We really enjoyed River Country because it was less "extreme" than the other water parks.

We miss RC too - my DS learned to swim there..... I agree, it would be great if they could fix it up & use it for the feature pool for FW, which sorely needs a better pool.

I might be wrong, but I think I remember being at River Country when I was a little one ... about 25 or so years ago? Does that make sense? I could swear that my parents have pictures of it from way back then, but I can only vaguely remember it. It would be neat to see it again, for old-time's sake. Does anyone have any pictures they can post?

River Country opened in 1976.

I agree, I really enjoyed RC, I wish it was still up and running.

River Country was the first water park in the world. It was based in a lake and they could not keep the water to safe levels. We have a sand based swimming pool in our town and the amount of chlorine needed is 10X more than an average swimming pool that has pumps and filters. Our town wanted a new aquatic pool but our town wouldn't do it because the ins is a lot cheaper on our sand bottom pool.

It closed around 2000-2001.

I believe it doesn't meet modern safety codes and would be to expensive to bring up to code.

We have a rather nasty bacteria that gets into lakes in Florida. It has actually caused a few deaths. I believe I read that Disney didn't want to take any chances with health issues. That is another reason that they don't let guests go swim in the lake.
