What Ever Happened to Compassion?

Just returned from a trip to the world Dec 27 - Jan 1. While at Epcot on Dec 28, my 11 yr old DD got sick. It was a not anything she could have controlled. I had to get a cast member to let us out of a line so we could rush her to the bathroom. A woman actually banged on the door of her stall telling her to hurry up. DD was frightened and left the stall. When she got out of the restroom she threw up. She was so emabarrassed. My husband got a CM who immediately got some NOVOM to put over it. My dd and I were waiting for DH to get some napkins and a sprite for her. People kept coming by and making comments. "EEEEWE, Gross, Yuck, Watch out for the Puke" etc. My DD was so humiliated. Couldn't they see that she was already sick and upset? Didn't they know that they were humiliating her? It made me so furious. I guess I should mention that I have been working with children for 28 years and have dealt with throw up, diareha, excessive mucus, soiled and wet clothing more times than I can count and I have always tried to comfort the child involed not humiliate them. How would these people have felt if it had been their child? Thanks for letting me vent.

if you ask me that is extremely rude. pixie duest for your dd. i agree what happend to compassion. how rude!

How sad. We were in line for Peter Pan and some kid threw up in line. Everyone could tell that he was about to cry and the whole line started saying "Don't worry, it happens" and other nice supportive things. Sorry your dd got treated badly.

Wow, I think I would have let that woman who was knocking on the door have a piece of my mind!! How dare she do that!! Were you there when it happened? Most likely you didn't say anything because you didn't want to further embarass your daughter, which I can understand.

As for the puke, I must admit if I saw puke on the floor I might react similarly. Although I don't think I'd say something in front of a kid who was obviously the one who had gotten sick.

I hope that the rest of your trip was good and that this event didn't spoil your families fun.

That's awful!

Hope she was OK! My DD6 threw up all over DH on a very crowded bus returning home to ASMO after Fantasmic when she was 2, everyone was OK about it, but I have noticed that in recent years - people just dont care. Its a real shame!!

Wow, I can't imagine showing anything but compassion for a sick child...very sad.

I'm so sorry your daughter had this happen to her. :sad2: It's hard enough to be a child sick on vacation nevermind having strangers make you feel as if it's something to be ashamed of.

My daughters puked several times at Disney on one trip (one 3 times in a row as we got her to the infirmary). The last thing on my mind was peoples comments. Honestly--I was gagging and kind of in the "ewww" mode myself. And everyone kept their distance but otherwise remained silent.

The woman banging on the door was extremely out of line and i have been fortunate enough to never encounter that behavior at Disney.

The smell is sooo bad....so it is sometimes hard to restrain one self. In my present state--I still have morning sickness...and my gag reflex would be tripping and I would be making faces and running to a stall myself to be sick. (DD has motion sickness and got sick in our van and I was getting sick out the window in response just a week and a half ago).

I hope she feels better though and the rest of your trip she wasn't  .

That must have been aweful for you and your dd. That's some holiday sprirt. We were there until dec. 27th and I noticed alot of people were extremely rude and disrespectful.

I understand the bathroom thing, that was just rude, but fail to see how people reacting to the puke were doing anything wrong.

DD was fine the next morning and our trip was not ruined. I was in the stall with her and she was so upset and frightened that the woman was beating on the door and yelling that I thought it best to help her get out of there. I didn't say anything to the woman because I was focusing on getting my daughter out and taking care of her.

After DD got to feeling better the next morning, we all had a wonderful time. It was very crowded, but we knew that would be the case ahead of time. I am a teacher and I can only go at busy times when school is out.

As for the sick incident, it was outside and the CM immediately covered it with NOVOM so there was no noticable smell. I would completely have understood people gagging although I didn't notice that. What I did notice was all the comments and most of them said in a sarcastic, mean spirited joking way - by adults not kids or teenagers. If the comments were made while DD was still throwing up I probably would not have even heard them. But she was just standing there with her head down while DH ran to a near by cart for napkins and a Sprite.

The worst part was even after DD was cleaned up, fresh clothes and all she still kept asking "Do I smell bad?" It broke my heart.

Poor kid.

I can still recognize a smell even with the stuff spilled on it though.

Everyone's smelling abilities are different. :( Now there is a way to be polite about it though so as not to make a scene with the reaction.

You should explain to poor DD that if she had gone ahead and thrown up while she was in the stall, no one would have beat on the door any more! Poor thing! :wizard:

This thread really makes me sad. Poor thing. We do all get sick now and then and not always in a "proper" place. I had a gallbladder attack in Epcot. NOT FUN. Shame on those "adults". :sad2:

For your DD :flower3: and for you

I agree. I use a wheelchair. What is on the ground/floor get on my wheels, which in turn gets on my hands. I would have been saying, "Look out, there's puke," as well.

There's a difference between warning someone "hey, watch out for the mess on the floor" and walking by making a big deal out of it saying "EWWWW" or "Gross!".

One is a helpful warning so someone doesn't accidentally step in it. The other is just being rude and would cause the poor kid to be even more embarassed and self-conscious.

It's just vomit. It's no one's favorite thing, but walking past it hasn't killed anyone. Best just alert the custodial staff and keep your comments to yourself!

Poor thing. Not exactly a disney magic experience!

Thar lady banging on the door was just plain rude. I dont think the other people walking by pointing ot the puke were intentionally rude or without compassion tho. But I am sure that just made a sick, embarassed child feel that much worse.
I hope it didnt ruin your trip!

I've always felt that one of the worst things anyone can do to a child is to humiliate him/her.:sad2: It's inexcusable when an adult does it.

:grouphug: to your daughter. I'm glad to hear that she felt better the next morning and that you ended up having a good time.:)

I would feel bad if it made the child feel bad but I would hardly call an honest reaction to something that gross, rude. It's not like the people reacting were trying to hurt his/her feelings, it's just a spur of the moment reaction.

Now if they had went on on the person that did it, I would agree.

IMO if somebody had went off on me because I simply said "gross" when I saw a pile puke, IMO that would have been rude.

Exactly. If they didn't see it happen they may not have even realized the person who puked was still there.
