I happen to be home today and don't normally see the mail person. We used to have a woman and in the summer she wore the uniform shorts and a short sleeved button down uniform shirt. I was just outside getting something from my car and noticed the mailman had on the uniform shorts with a blue t shirt with the sleeves cut off and some kind of team name printed on it? He also had a red white an blue bandana tied around his head. It's pretty warm here today (80's) but that's normal in the summer, I would think they would have to wear a uniform? Does your mail person have a regular uniform?

Nope. My mail lady brought up a package to the door today and she was wearing a tank top and blue jean shorts.

No uniform for our mail lady. She doesn't even drive a USPS vehicle.

The only way we know we have a substitute letter carrier is when we see a real USPS jeep/van/thingy with a uniformed driver. We think, "Oh, Pat must be on vacation." and "No wonder it's late." ;)

Our mailpeople just wear ordinary street clothes. No uniform. Of course they also drive their own vehicles, with just a big magnet attached to it during deliveries to show that it's the mail person. Oh the joys of living in the sticks...

If they work for the USPS they probably would wear a uniform. However, a contracter can probably wear whatever they want.

guess we both live in small MD towns..lol! except our mail lady's name is Mary Ellen!

I worked in the USPS while I went to college years ago...

A "City" carrier has the uniform and is required to wear it. A "rural" carrier doesn't have to wear the uniform. Whether your house is a city route or a rural route depends on the population figures of your town. I was a substitute rural carrier and used my own vehicle as the route I worked on didn't have a USPS vehicle and I got paid a wear and tear figure which was worth it to get. There are rural routes that had postal vehicles too...

I suspect your city carrier just shed his uniform shirt for the cooler tank...

Not true in our area. I am a rural route carrier. This means I drive a regular post office truck since my route is under 23 miles. Rural carriers wear what ever they want but must wear their badge. We are called rural carriers because the people's houses mailboxes are at the curb instead of on the house(city carriers). In my post office if your route is over 23 miles, you have to use your own vehicle and drive sitting in the passenger seat.

If the mail carrier is new, they may not have a uniform yet. You are on a 90 day probation period first and after that are supplied a credit card with your uniform allowance. They aren't cheap. Your station may have some old pieces of uniforms that people have donated after they quit or something, but otherwise you'd be paying out of your own pocket before probation is up. A rural carrier wouldn't have a uniform. Don't know why you're normal carrier wouldn't wear a uniform

"No wonder it's late." ;)

Just an fyi, it's hard to get used to a new route or one you only work on once a month or so. You have to learn everyone's names and house #'s. We have to sort our own mail. The other day I was subbing for another carrier on a route I trained on 3 months ago. I worked on Monday(which is usually the busiest day). The normal guy is out the door by 10:30. I didn't get out until 1:30!!! So if your carrier is late, it's hard for them too! Don't be to hard on us!! :flower3:

Oh, I'm sorry if that sounded like a complaint. I really meant it as an "aha, that explains it" kinda thing. We don't get home from work/school until 4:00pm so it's unusual to discover an empty box at that time of day. Then, when we see the sub roll by, we understand. :flower3:

Yep, same here, but many of them don't have the magnet on the cars.

My mail lady has been delivering to us for years, drives a USPS truck and still never wears a uniform.

We live on a rural route, so our mail carrier drives her own van (with a special gas pedal built into the passenger side of the car) and wears jean shorts and t-shirts.

:rotfl::rotfl: OMG, I was going to quote you to just say "ditto!" and then I noticed your location! I'm in NH also and that's exactly what we have - a regular guy who drives his own car with the little flashing amber light.

No uniforms in the boonies...

My dad retired from the Post Office and in some cases, the "casual" employee did not have a uniform.

Our mailperson here in Spokane and the one we had in Vegas, wear street clothes and they drive their own personal vehicles. At first I thought that in Vegas it was because the town was growing too fast and they didn't have enough USPS vehicles to go out. I never though that they were actually sub contracted, I guess that would make sense. Hmm, maybe I will have to ask our mailperson the next time I see her.

Ours wears regular clothes and drives a pickup truck. I think he's also the policeman in town. :rotfl: not really, but we live in a small town.

Totally off topic but Montecristo - I always forget to mention it when I see your posts, but your baby is just beautiful.
