What does your dog do in the car?

I'm wondering what is typical dog behavior for riding in the car...

Harley is hyper when we get in, but when we start moving, his eyes get droopy and he usually goes to sleep in my arms. Is that normal? Or do all dogs react differently?

I just am scared that he's not handling the ride well, and we're subjecting him to it unnecessarily. We often take him with us when out running errands and such... do dogs that get anxious or carsickness show it in an obvious way?

DH said it's just like a baby in a car, he's only 3 months old... the movement rocks them to sleep.

So what does your dog do in the car?

(I've only had cats, and they usually howled their head off and shot fur across the car, LOL)

George does all the driving! He's a VERY smart dog!

Sometimes she hangs her head out the window and "snaps" at the cars going in the opposite direction. It's really funny.

The first time I took Opie, our lab, on a little car trip, he puked in the back seat because I was driving too fast on the twisting turning road that we were on. Serves me right...

Now, after he calms down a little, he just lays down and pants. Because he knows that a car rides usually means...the vet...

my dog absolutely LOVES riding in the car. He jumps in the back seat and I have to open both back windows, a real pain in the winter!! and he puts his nose out just a little..

After he gets his "sniff the air" fix, he just sprawls out on the seat

my dogs puke if they're in a kennel, if they're just in the back seat they lay down.

After I kick him out of the driver's seat...he proceeds to slobber all over the window. I can only lower it part way or he'd be a hood ornament on the car behind me...so all that "I'm so excited I'm in the car" drool is freshly planted there. It's lovely.

DD has a dog who although only 1 year old, is about the size of a full-grown German Shepherd now.. She bought a safety harness/seat belt for him and he sits right up in the seat like a person and looks out the window.. He is SOOOOO well behaved - no barking, fidgeting, whining, barfing, etc..

He also rides on the jet ski with her - LOL.. I'll have to see if she has a photo that I can try to figure out how to post.. He LOVES riding on the jet ski, as well as riding in the boat..

Our lab Tex farts his brains out it is horrible He is in the back seat farting away and we are all the ones with our head's hanging out the window's!!!! He does a lot of this too

Monty Dog would LOVE to ride on a Jet Ski!!!

Harley likes to see out, but he's just so small! Poor thing never will be big enough to see out the window =)

Our Great Dane loves car rides!
If she could, she would stand up the whole time, but the van is just not big enough. She usually lays between the driver's seat and the front passenger seat on her "blanket". If she sits and is well behaved I usually give her little treats along the way. If she tries to drive - no treat! Unfortunately she is a farting machine too. Ewww doggie!!!! We usually blame Dad

My Scots typically are in their travel kennels in the car. Mac will go to sleep and is a really good boy. Tipper will fuss and cry for 15 minutes or so, then curl into a ball with her head at the back of the box.

When out of the box, I get to hold a pup. Mac is on my legs trying to see everything! We have to ride in the back, because I'm afraid of what the airbag could do to him in an accident. (Worried Momma here.) Tipper will crawl up on my shoulder and tuck her head down my shirt and sigh. She is very nervous.

Very lucky mine don't get carsick!

The first time Jack went in our car he puked...but now he loves it and sits in the back seat and sticks his head out the window and just looks all around at everything. But I read somewhere that it is not a good idea to let dogs stick their heads out the window, something about them swallowing air or something. I can't remember the whole reason why, but I know I saw something saying not to allow this.

We have to open the window enough so ted can stick his nose out, and he bounces form window to window in the backseat sniffing. After a while, he settles down and lays on the back seat like a good boy, but if I stop at a stop sign or whatever, he pops his head up. Apparently he thinks he needs to direct me on which way to turn!

Our dogs love to ride in the van.

Pumba, the sheltie, hops right in the passenger seat, he is a gentleman...unless you have human passenger. He doesn't like to give up his seat. If he does get down he goes to the back seat, and watches things from there...

Molly, the cocker spaniel, tears through the van like she's huntin' for squirrels. The van doesn't move untill someone has hold of her collar. She usualy sleeps at my feet in the house and once or twice (while still in park) she sat on the gas pedal. Nose prints on all van windows and heavy breathing courtesy of Molly...

They love to ride so much, Pumba gets "vocal" if my DH leaves without him...we have to hold onto them when the company leaves or they'll take home a spare dog
