for me, "whatever" means "I don't care," but definitely not in a mean way. If my friend asks me what I want to do on a Friday night, I'll say "I don't know, whatever," but it doesn't mean that I don't care enough to give a response, it just means that I don't have an opinion and they can decide.

Becca, that's probably the closest meaning to how I've ever taken the word or once in awhile use the word.

The reason I asked this question was I got into a teenie arguement with my physical therapist the other day on the meaning. He said to him it means "shut up" which I NEVER thought it meant that but to each their own.......thanks for the responses everyone.

It means the person can't be bothered with the subject at hand. I find it kind of annoying.

It means whenever my kids use it I want to deck them. (not that I would) When they use it they're blowing me off.
