What does Obama stand for?

I dunno, but there are plenty of politicians to ask. Bush does/did coke, Bill and HIllary are potheads, and most of capitol hill probably has one addiction or another.

Before you get your panties in a wad...just bemused by the statement he has made. I thought it silly. It would be like any of the above asking the same.

Have you been watching the 30 second sound bites on the evening news, or have you been watching the actual debates, reading his plans on his website, etc?

I am NOT trying to attack anyone - but if you do listen to just the sound bites, of course it sounds like he is all fluff and no substance! I am in London, so haven't been able to watch all of the debates, save for the last one between him and Clinton, but he seemed to have subtance there.

If you want to view his positions, he has a variety of position papers available on his website (the pdf files go into greater detail). I also second the recommendation for ontheissues.org - very good non-partistan website listing straight facts and quotes!

I wasn't being snippy, I really meant it. That's why I gave examples from both sides. Maybe if the politicians could figure out why THEY have drug problems, they could figure out why the country has a drug problem.

well, wouldn't it help to know why people are attracted to them if you want to stop the attraction? The War on Drugs as it stands certainly hasn't been all that successful. Perhaps a new approach might help?

Then why don't you check out his website, watch his speeches and read his book Audacity of Hope?
I have been on his website and Clintons and McCains I really don't know who to vote for. I just want to hear what makes people want to vote for him because "change" is not enough for me. McCain is change. Hilliary wasn't President and she is a women so that is "change". I "hope" I win the lottery to "change" my life but I don't see it happening any time soon.

Change is mainly because we've had a Bush or Clinton in the Whitehouse since the 80's. It's time for someone fresh.

Just because a Bush or Clinton has been in the Whitehouse for almost the last 20 years doesn't mean that we should discount Hilliary because she is a Clinton or McCain because he is a republican. This just isn't enough for me to vote for or againist him.

For those who honestly want to see for themselves and aren't willing to swallow the right-wing talking points whole and spew them back out, here's a non-partisan web site that gives a tremendous amount of substance as to where he stands on issues and what his accomplishments are.

http://www.ontheissues.org/Senate/Barack_Obama.htm

Great site thank you. He seems to have a VERY short record since he hasn't been in office very long. Not much of a track record to work with.

I don't want to speak for the OP, but I think she wants data other than that on his website. Personally, I'm really good in art. I have a website. I don't tell people on my website that I can't draw. See where I'm going?

I have an open mind, but I've asked the OP's question to several Obama supporters and no one can give me an answer on the reasons they want him as president, aside from him "changing the white house." What the heck does that mean to me?? Is he going to put up new curtains, scrub the floors, really. I'm not trying to be snotty...really I'm not. I'm really looking forward to the answers on this thread.

Thank you.

Fitswimmer, this is a thread and battle you will never win with people who really do not know or want to know what he stands for.

How about ending the trade imbalance, he stands for that, said it yesterday, but you hear nothing about it... Those who are already biased have loud voices and will continue to use them, regardless of what they are told.

As for saying he's not been in politics long, 11 years is a long time IMHO...

Part of me knows it's futile...but I keep hoping that someone who is just lurking here will see something that will encourage them to look further and investigate ALL the candidates and go into that booth in November with opinions formed by something other than the misleading information being spewed out by organizations on BOTH sides.

OK, let me try again. All of the above mentioned people used drugs. They used them as an escape, a form of self-medication, because other's used them and they were curious, or because it was a good time. Not rocket science.

and you know this can be extrapolated to every person who uses drugs because?

I have no problem with a change in approach, especially since we're not all that successful with what we're doing now.

I'm sorry I am just now getting into the political thing since I wait until the last minute(I know not very good of me) but for the site I was looking at, almost all action he has taken or had a stand on something has been in the last year or two so I just thought he was new. :confused3

Honestly...I don't want to seem mean, but this question comes up over and over and over

If you can access the Disboards, you can access any information about any politician's goals, achievements, and beliefs. Right here, right now. Do it right and you won't even have to close this window.

If you're really adventurous, he has authored quite an impressive book (just won a grammy for the audio book, I believe, if you're not a reader.)

With the internet at your fingertips, there should be nothing you honestly don't know. Start here: www.barackobama.com, or even www.google.com.

Let me add that if I were just listening to little news blurbs or even parts of speeches, I couldn't tell you what any of the candidates stand for. It's all just "bla bla, change, bla, hope, bla, bla." All of them. You really need to take the initiative and research for yourself. Like I said, you can do that from where you're sitting right now. We live in a fantastic age where there is really no excuse not to be educated on issues that interest you.

*Sigh.* I think there is a portion of the population who likes to think they are asking relevant questions, but then they refuse to read the answers. It's the 'ole you can lead a horse to water thing...:goodvibes

If you're making record profits-you dont' need tax breaks.

I
Companies are in business to make profits for their investors. The United States already has the highest corporate tax rates in the world. The effective result of taxing companies even more will be;
1. They will pass the tax onto the consumer.
2. They will lay off workers.
3. They will move off shore.

it really does bother me a bit that there are so many people who want things spoon fed to them. If voting is at all important to you-no matter what side of the aisle you sit on-do the candidate and yourself the courtesy of doing your homework. If you can spend HOURS planning a Disney vacation or shopping for a purse online-you can take the time to research and understand the issues. I would add one site to the above: www.ontheissues.org- it's non partisan and has information on everyone.

I used to buy that theory-then I lived through the past 7 years and watched companies get break after break after break and NOT pass those breaks on to the consumer.

LOL, I'd never read a candidates own site...That is too funny. I'd much rather see actions and results similar to Muggman's site. You can say and believe what ever you want in print. It is the prrof of the pudding that I want to know about.

I'm pretty sure companies have been moving off shore anyway- to say, India... Mexico... China.... Outsourcing jobs to those countries because they can pay people there dirt and get away with it, all while putting money into the pockets at the top.

So, I do not buy this argument.

I guess from what I have been reading I wouldn't want to be in the same company as his supporters. I am trying to be very open minded about the election.

I don't want spoon fed anything. I was asking a question isn't that "your homework"? Oh and I don't spend hours planning our Disney vacations I like to pick a date, resort and go. :thumbsup2

I've read most of that and while I agree with some and disagree with others, what is his record of accomplishments? Was he able to add 25,000 teachers?
Do kids get free college with a "B" average?

First Senate bill: increase Pell Grant from $4,050 to $5,100. (Aug 2007)

This is the first bill he introduced? When was he elected to the Senate?

He can vote YES or NO on bills he supports but that doesn't necessarily mean the bill passed or failed to his satisfaction. Politicians frequently tout "they voted this way or that way" or "sponsored this or that bill" but if they weren't successful, it's pretty meaningless.

He has a lot of lofty goals listed. How is he going to implement those? *That's* what people want to know. Don't tell me you want to do something without telling me how you're going to do it. Actions... Not words. I think what a lot of people are hearing now are just words. And they sound good. Reality is a whole lot different though.
