Ok, I have a NS sign on my door. So why do people who I dont know want to sell me stuff? Then when I say what does the sign say, they get all crabby? Don't go away mad, just go away!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had one on my door once....

I pointed it to the solicitor who thought he was quite suave when he said that he never pays any mind to those signs. Such a shame b/c conversation was over and my door wasn't interested in purchasing anything.

Our housing complex has a HUGE sign at the entrance that says "NO SOLICITING!"

next to our doorbell, wadda ya know, a sign that says, "NO SOLICITING!" in big letters.

Eventually, my dad answered the door and said "Stop. What does that say right there?" and slams the door. They never come back. Especially at 9 AT NIGHT :scared1:

it means you're unfriendly and unwilling to buy a caramello to help out Scout Troop 331 with thier annual camping trip.

I made a sign on my door that says NO solicitors (including any religious materials)... and then it says if you ring the doorbell anyway I do have dogs that will come running and I will not stop them (the solicitors haven't rung the doorbell since I put it up!). My mom loved the sign - I made her one as well and her solicitors stopped ringing the bell (she doesn't have a dog either - LOL!)

Let me ask this on this thread.

If a local shop were going around hanging coupons on doors, is that considered soliciting? Not ringing doorbells, just leaving coupons. (coupons that many people look forward to)

I ask because I was kicked out of a condo complex for soliciting, and personally, I don't think I was, and considering we get a ton of business from this huge complex, the coupons are appreciated.

I hate when businesses do this. If I'm on vacation I've stopped my mail and newspaper but now everyone can tell that I'm not home from all the stupid fliers.

Actually, we don't get the scouts, but if we go to the local wally world or grocery store when it's selling time that is where they are.

Mostly we get religous, or today it was the Schwann's guy. Only 1 person on this cul de sac buys from them. But today was the first day someone came to my door. Here is a hint, I have a sign, I even have license plates to let you know what kind of attitude I have right there in the drive way, so why would you come up to my house?

But you are soliciting your company by handing out flyers, if I see a coupon person even when the local leaders will come by and knock on the door or try to leave a flyer, if I want you as a leader I will vote regardless, if I want your business I know how to use a phone. No offense.

To the poster who made the sign about the dogs, that is funny. I actually have a big GS dog who goes with me to the door. Next question someone will ask, does he bite? Um yes because honestly I don't know who these people are. They may see just me and think I live alone, yes my dog bite. Actually he would just lick them to death but people don't need to know that.

I hate this as well. :sad2: I won't go to your business if you put one of those fliers on my door. I really wish they would find some other way of advertising.

The sign means don't bother me by sending me people who are gong to try and convince me to buy stuff I don't want or need. It means don't come find me, I'll find you.

The only thing I despise more than strangers trying to sell me stuff is friends using our relationship to get me to buy stuff & the bottom feeder companies that manipulate vulnerable people this way. I am not that needy and you are on dangerous ground when you go that route with me.

I don't mind the flyers in my mailbox but if I am a good customer why not just hand them out at the shop? To be honest, the only coupons I tend to hold onto are the sorts where they get punches after each use towards a discount or a free something.

Let me offer a different perspective. Direct selling is what heals and grows our economy.

As a business, you can't have it both ways. Your door opens to sell...it's also open to be sold. A business phone is the the same. It's the price of doing business. I would also say you are turning away new business as those signs reflect the attitude of the business owner. Not only that, outside sales people can be a great source of new referrals...even if you don't buy.

Let me give you a sign used by a doctor's office that gain the respect of a slew of sales reps and free advertizing. The sign reads "Sales reps hours: Wednesday from 10 to 3 pm." When they call or stop by out side those hours, reps are told of the policy that the doctor is willing to speak and meet with reps during Sales reps hours.

Using a system to deal with sales people will save your sanity and get you feet on the street that will mention your business to others on a daily basis.

As for private residences the no solicitation signs should be respected. Your home is not open for business.

We have a neighborhood-sponsored No Soliciting sign on the window surrounding our front door AND a county-sponsored No Handbills sticker on the mailbox...and we still get people trying to sell us something weekly (and are even brave enough to ring the doorbell when my "Little One Sleeping" pillow is hanging on the door...if you wake my baby, do you think I am going to buy your product? NO!). The worst are the companies that throw a ziploc with their business card and a rock in my driveway. Do they seriously think that throwing trash in my yard is going to get my business??? I won't do business with a company that (1) solicits against my wishes on my property or (2) throws trash or candy (do they think people actually eat it?) in my driveway or puts it on my mailbox. I send it all to the county office that sponsors the No Handbills program and they send warnings & fines to companies who disregard the stickers! If you want my business, do your advertising in writing through the mail. I don't mind Girl/Boy Scouts (and usually buy from them or give them a donation if I am not interested in what they are selling), but businesses are another story!

My sign (homemade on the computer) reads :

No soliciting of :
Church Groups
Lawn Mowers
Scrap/Junk Haulers
Window Salesmen
Yard Workers
~~~~ Children's Fundraisers Welcome ~~~~
