What does liberal vacation and holiday schedule mean?

In America, that probably means you actually get a vacation once in a while and perhaps a holiday here and there. Perhaps. Remember, this is America, so workers have to expect to be treated like crap.
 
I am thinkng 2 weeks right off the bat and more than the usual 6 national holidays? Maybe you can start earnig it at 6 months, carry unused days over, use partial days...all in all sounds liek a good thing to even SEE vacation!:thumbsup2
 
I'm guessing you are allowed to take vacation time off whenever, not restricted to a certain time of year :confused3

Wow, that's pretty negative. Sorry if you've been treated like crap by employers. I can't relate to that because I feel I've been treated pretty fairly through the years. I guess I should consider myself fortunate.

It sounds like they are saying they have a generous vaca and holiday policy....Or maybe if you are a liberal you are the only one who gets a vaca and holiday:rotfl2: :confused3

All American workers are treated like crap by the system. By law, all workers in advanced countries are guaranteed vacation time, EXCEPT workers in the USA. Workers in the USA are not leagally entitled to any vacation days. Workers in other countries have it far better. EU workers for example get at least 4 weeks.

I did not realize that by law, workers were not legally entitled to vacation days, in the U.S. That's interesting that the U.S. doesn't have that same law as some other countries. Thanks for clarifying.

"Liberal Vacation & Holiday" means that when you "put in" for your vacation time it is not dependant upon someone elses' vacation time. For example, in the healthfield, retail and service sectors this is not the case because of scheduling constraints. If they need 3 people on duty and there are 4 employees...then obviously, only one of you can have that be your vacation week. It also means, generally, that all National Holidays are considered days off and a minimum of one week's vacation per year. This does not always mean that the days off will be with pay.

Liberal Scheduling is when you set your own schedule. This is often seen with the vacation and Holiday.

Best bet is to contact their Human Resources and find out their definition and actual policies.
 
Probably that they are generous (by US standards) with the amount of vacation time you get, and when you can take it, and that most if not all national holidays are also paid days off. My company is like this, although my division is so short staff that we can't take more than one or two days from June through October anymore because that is our busy season and they won't let us get temps to cover us. Generally thoughout my company though, you can take your vacation just about whenever you want. I've been here ten years and get 4 weeks paid vacation, 12 sick days (that can rollover indefinatly, I've got 70 banked), and all Federal holidays.

Conversly, my DH gets no Federal holidays (not even Christmas, if it's not his scheduled day off, he still goes to work! At least he gets time and a half though) and two weeks paid vacation, and 5 paid sick days that cannot be banked. He is also restricted in when he can take off, from Thanksgiving week until New Years, it's blacked out except for the most senior employees (20+ years at the company usually before you can even think to request time off in those six weeks). If he manages not to get laid off and the company stays in buisness, once he's there 10 years he'll get three weeks paid vaction.

I work for a large corporation that uses a flexible work/vacation schedule. It is primarily centered around salaried employees. It leaves us free to arrange our work and vacation schedules to suit our specific needs ie without regard to seniority (which is how it used to be). For me, this means a 9/80 work schedule for a base as well as "remote" office time (1-2 days per week depending on work-load).

I notice our job listings state we have "flexible" vacation and holiday policies. Perhaps they really mean flexible and not liberal.

LOL, I was thinking something along the same lines. When DH had a job that used similar wording, it meant he didn't have to work a full year before getting any vacation days, and he got Christmas and New Years Day off with pay. Yes, that is better than the typical job in his field - that was actually the only job that gave him paid vacation/holiday time - but it still sucks pretty badly.

Yeah, it is absurd how little a typical working man gets in America. Yet somehow it's working class folks who complain the loudest when businesses are "over-regulated" and forced to pay a minimum wage and so forth. Orwell would be proud.

This is very true. Vacation time is considered "a gift" and the company can take it back any time it wants to.
 
It means that the company wants to make itself sound attractive without telling you what benefits it really offers. It's a meaningless phrase.
 
Retail here with "liberal vacation". That is when I'm not blacked out. I'm 5 years on permanent staff and have 3 paid weeks plus 13 personal days this year. And the 6 paid holidays. Downside is as an assistant visual director I have about 6 months a year of blackout dates. But I work flex time, so there is a way around that. :thumbsup2

In contrast when I was working for a smaller law office all I got was one week and 2 personal days.
 
We have a liberal vacation and policy, depending on your position. Employees not involved in operations receive 17 paid time off days a year (sick/vacation/etc), plus 13 paid holidays, plus 40 hours (or 5 days) worth of 'other time' each year, pro-rated from date of hire. Additionally, our jury service days are paid as well as 5 bereavement days for an immediate family member.

It might take 'liberal' to the extreme, but it goes a long way to making employees feel valued.
 
I think that the statement "liberal vacation and holiday" policy is alot of hype and extremely vague, like most other advertising I've seen. I am sure that my employer would describe our vacation policy as "liberal", but, it is adequate, at best. I have the same number of vacation days, with 17 yrs at my position, as a new hire in my position, because that is "fair". I am a physician. I get a total of 23 days PTO a year, which includes vacation, sick days, personal days. I can't take a vacation if other doctors want off the same time, like fall and spring break when my son is off school, or if one of the other docs is on maternity leave, or you name it. I have accrued 6 weeks of vacation time, because of all the restrictions and limitations on when I can take it.

In addition, doctors are on call 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year (except 366 in leap years). So, we work on holidays, 24 hr shifts. We don't get "comp time" either. When I work the holiday, the hours show up as "holiday", even though I wrote "w" on my time sheet. Also, if a vacation should happen to include a holiday, we get docked PTO for the holiday. That is, for example, my vacation includes Christmas. Then I get charged 40 hours vacation, even though everybody else only worked 32 hours that week. But, 8 hours holiday shows up on my slip.

You just can't win.
