If you buy any ticket to DLR then during or after your trip (up to 2 weeks?) you can upgrade that ticket to an AP by paying the difference between the AP price and the ticket price.

What a lot of people do is they buy a hopper in order to get the early entry, then upgrade to an AP at the end of their trip and pay the difference. You also end up getting a few extra days on your AP if you upgrade at the end of your trip.
AP's also offer discounts on food and merchandise and hotel stays.
We buy APs to go each summer. For example, we upgraded our tickets to APs one summer (July 08) and then came back the next summer (June 09) just before they expired. We got two summer vacations out of one year of APs. We then let them expire and now this summer we will get APs again to use this summer and the next.
Deluxe APs are only roughly $100 (give or take) more than 3 to 5 day tickets. So if you know you will come back the next summer before they expire, it is a good deal.
