I could ask that in Ed's thread, but I figured I would have better luck where everyone could see it..The doctor said Ed's kidneys are perfusiong and that that is a good thing... I have no clue what that means however.. Any help?

It means they are working and doing their job...it is a good thing!!:goodvibes

I think it means that the blood and accompanying nutrients are reaching the kidney tissues through the capillaries.

From what I could find on Google, it means they are flowing with water and blood, as in normal kidneys..Sounds great.:grouphug:

Perfusing...it means oxygenated blood is getting to them and that they are working.

Actually he was probobly using it as an indicator that the BP was at an adaquate level to provide blood to the kidneys. As the body goes into shock, the brain starts shunting the remaining blood to vital organs (which is why we get cold and clammy, the blood is diverted from the skin and our sympathetic nervous system is activated)The brain is the last organ to quit getting perfused, the kidneys the second. Usually we will use an IV of Dopamine to keep the BP at a level to at least perfuse the kidneys.
Maybe he was reporting that they no longer need the Dopamine?

His kidneys have been starting to work a little bit over the last 5 days or so..Not sure about dopamine..I haven't seen him get any of that and I've been writing down his meds,at least for a week or so

He'd be pretty darned sick if he was on a dopamine infusion, so I think you'd be aware of it!!! Judy, do you work in an intensive care unit because I haven't seen too many folks on an ordinary medical ward receive dopamine infusions. Always feel that by the time the dopamine is suggested, it's curtains!

OP, rest assured kidney perfusion is a good thing!

Jenny, kidney perfusion is a good thing. It means they are getting blood flow which will enable them to function and do their job!

#1MMFan-I work on a regular medical floor (not an ICU or a step-down)and we give low-dose Dopamine all the time for kidney perfusion. 25 in 250 at no more than 5cc/hour.

Well, I must admit i have just kept up on the situation by reading thread titles.....but I know he was on a vent, so I was picturing Ed in the ICU.....and usually the first sign of recovery is off the vent, and the second is the Dopamine getting DC'd.
Hope I didn't confuse anything!
Best wishes Jenny!

He is in the CTIC and he was one the vent..He's been off it for a while though..It's possible he was gettig dopamine in those early days when he was getting a ton of stuff..He doesn't get anywhere near as many meds now
