Ain't that the truth. I love wedding cake. So when I see a pretty fondant cake at the reception, I get sad. I was my cake to taste yummy. Im only gonna get a sliver anyways, Im not gonna look at it. Im gonna eat it. Give me buttercream or forget it!
Fondant is no where near as tasty as buttercream. It has a pasty, slightly sweet taste but a thick, unmoving texture. Rather gummy, I would say. Give me buttercream any day!
I've had the fondant kept on the cake when I have gotten it. And where in the heck would the put all the used fondant? EWWWW! Just the thought of a used up, icky pile of fondant sitting on some counter grosses me out. And I would think that a bride would be ticked that she paid for this fondant on her cake and the cutters stripped it off. Not that I would be happy about fondant on my cake, but its better than nothing.
Ugh, fondant is the worst. Chewy and gross. I always peel it off when I get a fondant-covered slice at a wedding. Usually, there's buttercream underneath! When we got married, we said it's buttercream or nothing... and it still looked pretty!

Usually there is buttercream underneath. Believe me the fondant is just there for decoration, not taste. Cake looks pretty, cake gets taken away, fondant comes off and tossed, ahh buttercream, enjoy!

I will say they did a Disney special on cakes and they said "You don't eat the fondant" and they showed them peeling it off to serve the cake. Before that show, I just assumed you ate it as that was the frosting. I want to say it was the wedding one more than just cakes but I've watched so many they all kind of mesh together so couldn't tell you for sure.
I saw that and thought -- what's the point then...give me the regular frosting, so it may not look as clean but I would think for cake taste is more important.
I have taken Wilton classes so know how to do basic decorating and this was before fondant was practically on every cake.
If you get a cake where they used the good fondant (good=$$$$ ), it doesn't taste bad at all. Wilton fondant is cheap and awful. Satin Ice is excellent imo.
I love the look of fondant and it's no big deal just to peel it off before serving or let each person take their own off. You get the best of both that way, the look of fondant and still have buttercream underneath. You can't do this with buttercream!:
This was for our birthday. The fondant Disney uses is not good at all, but the icing underneath is light and airy...better than buttercream which I think is way too sweet and greasy.
