What does everyone think about receipt checkers?

Have they ever looked in your bags and rummaged through your stuff? My Walmart has had reciept checkers for as long as I can remember (until they hired police officers). Never once had I seen them rummaging through a bag. I just hand them the reciept, the glance at the cart and thats that. If I have a one bag, I would willingly open it and let them look inside, and as long as a customer willingly lets them, then they do have the right. You also have the right to refuse, and I'm guessing you wouldn't be hauled off and detained in a back room and forced to let them search you before you could leave the store :)

Its really no big deal people, hand them the reciept and be on your way, no reason to get yourself in a tizzy :confused3

Again, not true. They have no right to detain you. Actually, they cannot detain you by law. If they did, they better be sure that you have stolen something or they are in for a huge lawsuit. I'll do a search on Google but I read a few articles on this. It happened to some people and the company (wal-mart) had to pay big bucks.

Do you feel this way when you are asked to walk through the security devices at the airport? What if you were one of the "random" people chosen to remove their shoes?

The people at the ballpark I frequent aren't real police officers, but there's no way I'd be allowed to skip the metal detectors on the way in.

Nor do I feel, in any way, that by making me go through these procedures am I being accused of anything.

Same goes for my trip to the store. The nice, elderly man is not treating me like a criminal merely because he wants to check my receipt. As has been shown on this thread, the cashiers have made mistakes that have been caught because of these procedures.

Come on. This is completely different. We are talking about receipt checkers, not airport security. I'm not going to talk about that because it's off topic and does not pertain to receipt checking. Oh and I fly for work a lot. every airport requires everyone to remove shoes. It's not random.

And, you have every right to skip the metal detectors. You won't be allowed in the venue but you don't have to go through the detectors. You also will not be detained or searched against your will if you do not agree to the metal detectors. You can turn right around and leave on your own accord.

But it is on-topic, since you said the issue at hand is the idea of being "guilty until proven innocent." The airline is trying to protect its bottom line by preventing a catastrophe, and the store is protecting their bottom line through attempts to cut back on cashier errors and shoplifting. I don't see the difference.

Simple enough if you don'[t like stores that have recipet checkers stay away from those stores. I still find it odd you feel like they are accusing you of stealing:confused3:confused3

I'm sure there are a few cases in which someone was detained, however when you take into account all the stores in that do reciept checks, I'm sure you will find those numbers very low and attributed to poor management and not a company policy.

airlines don't do searches so they are not protecting their bottom line. TSA does the searches. TSA is a gov't entity under the department of homeland security.

That's how I feel. I understand that you don't understand why I feel that way :) but i do.

correct. Poor management and simply not understanding the law. Hence why they were sued. They don't have the right to detain and search.

One thing that most people don’t realize is that retail establishments are in fact PRIVATE property. They can establish almost any rule or policy they want. Most businesses are not governed by the same rules public places are. The ONLY power you have over this is the choice not to shop there.

again. Store policy does not supercede state and/or federal law

There is a difference between someone standing in front of a door asking to see your reciepts and the items in your cart, and someone telling you that you cannot leave the store unless you do so. They do not have the right to do the latter, but they do have the right to ask for your permission to check your reciept and items, and you have the right to let hem or refuse.

exactly my point. Thank you. They have every right to ask me for my receipt and I have every right to say "No, thank you " and keep walking

You have that right then they should have the right to follow you to your car and get your license plate number and call the cops. they have no idea if you paid or not.

sure they can do that. Still doesn't mean you committed a crime. And if they file a police report saying you stole items and you didn't, they have just opend the door for a huge lawsuit.

Perhaps not checking your bags. But what about the times you may have soda/water underneath the cart? Would you speed on by and not let them check those?

Doesn't matter. You paid for those items, they are your property and no one has a right to search your property except a law enforcement officer.
You may have missed the one or more posts in this thread where it's been pointed out that sometimes - often enough that it can be an issue - shoppers forget they have items on the shelf under the cart and don't pay for those items.

Why is fact when you state it, but luvmy3's statement "not true" because she is 'guessing' - i.e. presuming, inferring, whatever - the exact same thing?

Seriously, do you see the 70 year old man at the door detaining and searching people against their will alot? We are talking about a store's right to check your purchases against the reciept. The minute a customer willingly gives the checker their reciept, they are giving them the right so unless you can show that every customer that refuses is detained and subjected to a something just short of a cavity search you are blowing this whole detained and searched thing out of proportion.

I hate this! Especially when I'm in a hurry and the store just "made" me wait in a long line because they haven't staffed the registers properly. And then, they want to make me wait again? Why not pay an extra cashier?

I'm not a mean person, so I don't take it out on the checker, but its hard to keep it in check! Guess this is a pet peeve of mine.

I accept this at a warehouse club (although I don't like it) because I know when I pay for membership, that this is what I should expect.

At WalMart, I find it extremely obnoxious. Half the time whether they check my receipt or not depends on the checker and their mood - or if they are having fun talking with someone. I have fantasized about telling them to call the police - I'm out of there! I haven't had the guts yet, but who knows, I'm getting older and a little meaner :goodvibes.

I read the post wrong. That was my mistake. I didn't see the part you bolded

I read your previous post incorrectly which prompted my reply. I apologize for that.

The only time they check my receipt at Walmart is when I purchased something that too big to fit in a bag.
Doesn't bother me, in fact when I make one of those purchases I keep my receipt out cause I know they need to check for that item.

99% of the time I enter and exit thru the garden center at our walmart. Its just easier for me because the stuff I normally go in there is closest to the back of the store.
they don't have the receipt checkers there.

but in the front they do most times, but they have never asked to see my receipt, they just smile and say have a nice day :confused3
so I keep walking.

I do shop at BJ's and they check, some more then others, but its a cursory glance over the cart, don't know how they can tell if something is buried under that wasn't paid for.
I try to shop there when it is not busy, so usually not a big line up for the receipt check.

So I guess to answer, the receipt checkers don't bug me.

what does bug me though is the grocery store where I shop has those self scanners, you can scan and bag your items as you go along, then just pay.
well it randomly does an "audit" where a worker has to come over and scan items to be sure you scanned them too. to check for theft.

anyway, I have been getting audited every time I go in lately!!
last week once, then this week 2 days in a row!!
I didn't mind the random audit, but now especially 2 days in a row, kind of bugged me. that feature is supposed to help you get in and out of the store faster and more efficiently! not so when you get the audit!
but since i love using those scanners i will put up with it!! LOL
