What does "emo" mean?

DD's friend just said to her something about not knowing that so-n-so was "emo" and DD(and I) have no idea what that means. Can anybody clue me in? I know I could google it but I was reading here on the CB and I know you guys will be quicker

like I said, "emo" can be a bad name if you are NOT emo. Its not nice to call someone emo unless they call themselves emo. its this whole code of ethics. lol.

and yes, they (TYPICALLY) wear tight pants, cover themselves in black and add random splashes of pink and purple. usually they write poetry abotu death adn or draw (mildy) frightening pictures.

But it is also music. Emotive Punk.

To me, emo isn't being depressed. It's just being in touch with your feelings and as an offshoot of that emo kids tend to listen to music that is really descriptive of your feelings. For any of you who aren't in touch with the current emo/indie/punk scene a good example of an older emo type would be Morrissey or The Smiths. The Cure is a good example too. But if you're interested in hearing any new emo bands Nightmare Of You, Brand New, Death Cab For Cutie and Copeland are all good examples. Basically, when I hear emo I don't think of it as way of dressing or acting...I see it as a genre of music. But there are plenty who see it as a negative thing and would hate being called emo and hate emo music. I listen to a lot of that music though and I'm not depressed and I definately don't hate life
