What does DING mean?

I have seen that acronym several times and can't find what it means anywhere. Can anybody help?

DING is a marketing sales tool used by Southwest Airlines which puts "$ale" airfares on for a few hours...then they are gone...

sometimes they reappear later sometimes not, so the catch is if you get dinged you try to book it at the lower fare ......
